The 7th arrondissement of Paris is home to some of Paris’ most famous landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower to the Musee d’Orsay, yet it is not the tourist fuelled hub of activity that may spring to mind. The 7th arrondissement is one of the largest in Paris, and aside from the immediate surroundings to the Eiffel Tower, it actually remain one of the most peaceful, calm and laid back in the French capital. This is the most elegant region of Paris, where your post code alone can open doors!

The 7th arrondissement is a wonderful place to stay during your exploration of Paris. Not only will the view you wake up to be quintessentially Parisian, but the streets here brim with Parisian grace, staying almost always clean and very rarely noisy. There are strong Haussmann influences in much of the architecture in the 7th arrondissement, with beautiful, large properties, perfect for large family holidays in Paris. There are some wonderful restaurants here to, mainly based near the Pont de l’Alma.

Once you arrive at your 7th arrondissement accommodation, the urge to explore will almost certainly rear its head, and there is plenty to see. The Eiffel Tower is the obvious starting point. It is the most famous symbol of Paris, and is certainly spectacular, especially if you are lucky enough to be able to see the Eiffel Tower at night from your 7th arrondissement self catering apartment or townhouse, as it is beautifully lit by the orange glow of its internal lights. The evening light show (for 10 minutes every hour from dusk until 2 am) is spectacular, offering the best of the Eiffel Tower at night. The golden domed Les Invalides (a 16th Century war hospital) and the Assemblee Nationale (the Palais Bourbon) are also well worth exploring if you are in the 7th arrondissement, especially if the National Assembly are in session. One of the favourite tours in the 7th arrondissement is of the Paris sewers or Les Egouts de Paris, if you can stand it!

Visitor’s also flock to the 7th arrondissement for the Musee d’Orsay, a huge, sprawling art gallery houses in an old train station. The Musee d’Orsay is best known for its impressionist works, known as the best collection of European impressionism the world over, with collections by all the greats, from Manet to Van Gogh, Monet to Renoir. However, the Musee d’Orsay is also home to great works from the post-impressionism movement, as well as a whole range of other displays.

There are some excellent tours starting from the outskirts of the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The Napoleon’s Footsteps Tour is a must for anyone with even a fleeting interest in military history, whilst the Bike and Segway Tour is a fantastic way to discover Paris on bicycle, without having to ever contend with traffic. For real relaxation though, why not take a dinner cruise along the Seine, giving you the finest view of the Paris skyline and the Eiffel Tower at night.
