Things to do in the Californian Desert

Hiking in the Californian Desert is a unique experience. There are many, many miles of trails to explore, taking in some of the most remarkable landscapes in the whole of California. The Joshua Tree National Park is and especially popular place to walk and mountain bike, through dramatic wilderness scenery alive with nature, despite the harsh conditions. More strenuous mountain walking can be found on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, but wherever you decide to walk, ride or cycle in the Californian Desert, you must make sure you are well equipped. Off roading, whether on a quad or in a 4x4 is an excellent way to see large parts of the desert, and is excellent fun too!

Fishing is also hugely popular in the California Desert, no matter how unlikely that may sound! The Imperial Wildlife Area is a fantastic place to fish for catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill, many of which can be caught anywhere along the Colorado River which flows serenely though the desert.

Golf is hugely popular throughout the Californian Desert, which is home to the world’s lowest golf course, the Furnace Creek Golf Course in Death Valley, which lies some 214 feet below sea level. Golf from Californian Desert accommodation is absolutely unique, and golfers have often commented on the different behaviour of golf balls struck here than on other courses around the world due to the differences in air pressure.

Weather in the Californian Desert

Sun worshipers will be in their own personal heaven from Californian Desert accommodation. There are around 360 days of uninterrupted sunshine each year in the Californian Desert, with daily temperatures usually in the mid-30’s during the middle of the day. Even in January, the coldest month, you can expect daily peaks of around 22°C, whilst in July, the hottest month, temperatures often soar past the 40°C mark.

Travel to the Californian Desert

There is an airport in Palm Springs, the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), but it doesn’t receive any direct flights from the UK. The airport is still remarkably easy to reach, with connections arriving from Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles on a regular basis.
