History of Cyprus:
Cyprus has had a rich history, which has left behind many fascinating archaeological remains. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all ruled Cyprus by turn from 568BC to 395AD. The island then became part of the Byzantine Empire until captured by Richard 1(the Lion Heart of England) and then held by the Knights Templar. Richards‘ Queen Berengaria is reputed to have lived in St Hilarion Castle and the Queens Window is still there today looking down at the villa.
The Lusignans ruled between 1192 and 1489 and they were responsible for the development of the famous Bellapais Abbey. The Venetians followed and ruled until 1571 when the Ottoman Empire conquered the island.Today the population of 180,000 is mostly Turkish Cypriot
