Many farmer’s markets and farm shops can be found in this area and are ideal for buying fresh meats, vegetables, tasty local cheese, Cumberland sausages, home-made cakes, jams and pies. Penrith has a weekly market in Great Dockray, one of the main squares in the town.
Visit the Local Church
The 18th century church of St Andrews is in a picturesque setting and is worth a visit. Look for the “Giant’s Grave” near the north wall of the church. It is said to hold the remains of Owain, King of Cumbria from 920-937.

Penrith Castle
The ruined remains of Penrith Castle date back to 1398. During the 15th century the castle was further upgraded and given to Richard, Duke of Gloucester who became King Richard III. The castle stands on an impressive motte.
Ullswater Steamers
The original Ullswater steam boats have been sailing across Ullswater for more than 150 years. The cruise boat stop at various points around the lake, allowing visitors to combine a lake cruise with spectacular walks in this magnificent scenery.
The Alpaca Centre
This unusual attraction gives the opportunity to view the alpacas in their paddocks with an opportunity to buy some of the exquisite items made from their luxurious wool. The young alpacas look particularly cute and cuddly!

The closest local airport to your Penrith holiday rental is the Leeds/Bradford International Airport which is 89 miles away. Newcastle Airport is 61 miles away, along the A69, and the Liverpool John Lennon Airport further south is 131 miles drive away.
However, the Lake District is also very accessible by train from London’s Euston Station or Manchester to Oxenholm (Kendal), Penrith or Carlisle. You can pick up a hire car from the station, making the journey very pleasant and hassle free.
