Toney's Farm Holiday Home

Plodging Family Northumberland
Review Submitted: August 5, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Having stayed in this cottage previously this year with no problems we booked again to take several family members at the end of July. Unfortunately, the weather was atrocious so no playing outside for the four children under the age of 6!
Due to the torrential rain, on only our second night, which caused a river to stream down the stone steps outside, a flood occurred covering 90% of the downstairs which made it totally un-inhabitable. 4inches of water in the space of 30mins covering 3 of the bedrooms, meaning that all of us had to spend the remaining 5 nights upstairs! It was a good job we hired the whole building!
Whilst the owners came with pumps to remove the water and were very apologetic about the inconvenience, even offering to do the laundry as the washing machine was not working, it did ruin the rest of the holiday for us. The smell of stale water and subsequent infestation of flies did nothing to improve the mood either.

The owners did apologise and left 2 bottles of cava and a box of biscuits whilst we were out, but seemed reluctant to come into contact again after this incident. They did say they would be in contact regarding some form of compensation or recompense, as we had hired all of the building but could only use half, but as of yet there has been no contact.

This incident has totally put us off returning to this barn, the spiders and cobwebs we could deal with but it will take a lot of money to correct the drainage system and prevent anything like this happening again, and when you have small children you do not want to be living in a damp and musty building. The rental costs, while not extortionate, are very high when you consider that we hired the whole space but only got to use half!
Owner's Response: To future renters, having maybe read the previous review about our barn, I would like to add some comments of my own.
The weather the week referred to was horrendous with torrents of rain falling one early evening which unfortunately could not drain away quickly enough and due to immense pressure went through the wall on one corner and flooded part of the downstairs. Since then we have dug away down the whole side of the barn putting in a new drainage system as well as repointing the wall beneath ground and lining with a plastic membrane.
To be fair the downstairs was very wet one end of the barn and one bedroom remained damp throughout. However the rest was usable by the next day.
I felt very sorry for our guests as the weather was so bad and entertaining small children in a strange house is never easy.
The barn is a strange design with bedrooms and a kitchen on both levels as well as bathrooms on both, it is now only let as one unit as it works better that way.
It has people in it as I write and all is dried out, I can't apologise enough and would like to hope that we have addressed any future flood problems although rain as we had is a very rare thing in the area.
I have ever intention of being in touch with our tenants but was rather busy sorting out the immediate problem and therefore haven't as yet.
I look forward to meeting new renters and obviously hope to make any stay comfortable.

Easter Break

Yam Yams West Midlands
Review Submitted: April 13, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
The description of the holiday cottage was accurate, it was spacious, homely and located in a rural setting, home from home. Having access to the whole barn was ideal, having 10 in our party, it gave us the space to move around, without feeling like we were living on top of each other . The beds were comfy, and we all slept really well.
It was well equipped, however, the saucepans etc could of been bigger, we struggled to cook using just one pan for each food item. There was everything to hand, just not big enough.
The cottage was dusty, with cobwebs and the furniture was well worn, however, this was of no real concern to us. Taking in the views, in the peacefull tranquilty of the countryside, made up for it. We had a wonderful time, my two teenage sons loved it, playing football outside, taking the dog for a walk and fitting in a game of golf. We chilled during the evening, in the comfortable lounge. I would recommend this for a quiet getaway, I find it difficult to fault because we had a brilliant time, the only downside was returning home! We will be returning, thats for certain.
We didn't see much of Jane, she popped in on our first night, but I knew if I needed her she was on the end of the phone. The people living behind the cottage were very friendly, it also gave some sense of security, because it is rural. Theres plenty to occupy your time, if your looking to get out and about, but it's a good place to recharge your batteries, if thats what you need.

Toney's Farm, The Tallot

Cornwall & Yorkshire Crowd Cornwall & Yorkshire
Review Submitted: June 10, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
This was a charming barn conversion in a beautiful area - plenty to do, depending on the weather. The cottage was spacious and well equipped, but a little shabby and not excessively clean - as the week went on we became increasingly aware of the cobwebs! Also, one charming feature was the oak beamed ceilings, however the beams were pretty riddled with woodworm and 'crumbs' that dropped from the beams kept appearing in the beds.

I cannot say enough for Jane, the owner, who was charming, friendly and could not do enough to make our stay comfortable and pleasurable, even offering to do our washing as the washing machine was not working.
