Barn (for 5+2), Stables (for 7+2), Bee House (for 2)
Two fascinating Grade II listed historic buildings. A lovely 15th century Ancient Barn and a 17th century Old Stables are part of a medieval farmstead. They sleep up to 5 and 7 respectively with the option of renting a medieval Bee House with two additional beds. VisitBritain four star rated, they offer original features (old woodwork, beams and flagstones) with every modern comfort. They are in pretty, unspoilt countryside close to the delightful old market town of Castle Cary with its interesting shops and pubs. There are numerous places to visit, including Glastonbury (Abbey and Tor), Cadbury Camp (King Arthur's Camelot), historic houses and gardens, while the fascinating cities of Wells, Bath and Salisbury are also within easy reach. There are many places to interest children too - such as Wookey Hole Caves and Longleat theme and safari park.
Details for The Ancient Barn in Somerset & Bath, England
This medieval cruck barn was probably built in the 14th or 15th century and was converted in 1995 to provide a very comfortable, unusual and very special holiday home. It has an English Tourism Council four star rating. Every care has been taken to preserve its original features. There is a lofty living/dining/kitchen area with a wealth of old beams, a flagstone floor (with underfloor heating) and double doors leading to a small paved patio. Upstairs there is a heavily beamed bedroom with two single beds + folding guest bed. Downstairs there is a double bedroom with a magnificent king-sized antique brass bed, and the bathroom (with cubicle shower) is next door. There is constant hot water and full central heating. You can also rent a medieval Bee House in conjunction with the Ancient Barn. A few yards away, it has a double bed-room and ensuite shower room but no kitchen.

| Notes: | The double bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor. The bedroom upstairs sleeps two, but there is a folding bed for a third person. The height is slightly restricted in part of this room due to beams and eaves. The property has a small south-facing enclosed patio (garden furniture provided), which overlooks open countryside. Nearby the Bee house can also be rented providing an extra double bedroom and shower room. Many of our guest return again and again to this property. |
The accommodation:
The Ancient Barn, The Old Stables and the Bee House are situated between an old farmhouse and a small working farmyard (cattle and sheep) so there may be some normal farming activity at certain times of year. Our guests have never found this to be a problem but if you do not enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a farmyard then this is not the place for you! All three buildings are comfortable at all seasons - warm in winter, cool in summer, and provide an ideal base for touring this fascinating part of the west of England. Both Barn and Stables have VisitBritain four star ratings. We also have a Green Tourism Award. A car is essential. We ask our guests only to smoke out of doors.
From the Old Stables guest book
. 'What fantastic accommodation, ideally situated to explore the surrounding beautiful countryside.' 'Marvellous family accommodation furnished to the highest standard - we had a very comfortable stay.' 'We were very comfortable and loved the 'moo-cows' next door - we loved our days here.' 'A very welcoming cottage - we certainly appreciated the 'home from home' comforts and are certainly looking forward to our next visit - we need to explore Somerset more thoroughly and this makes an excellent base,' 'Thank you for an extremely clean and comfortable visit - the beds just a bit too comfortable!' 'A relaxing stay in a beautifully equipped cottage.' 'Thank goodness for the internet - it is quite possible we would not have discovered such a fantastic place without it. We have had a terrific week here and look forward to visiting again soon.' 'We wanted a quiet cottage in Somerset. We were delighted to get The Old Stables - a very relaxing atmosphere. We have really enjoyed our stay.'
Throughout the year...
Somerset has lots to offer: historic sites such as Glastonbury Tor and Cadbury Camp (also known as Camelot - a hill fort made famous by King Arthur), ruined Castles and Abbeys, delightful country pubs offering delicious meals made from local produce, National Trust houses and famous gardens. For those who enjoy shopping there are numerous antique and craft shops in the area and Clarks Shopping Village is a short drive away at Street. This is a very special place in an area of England that as yet has hardly been touched by tourism. The countryside is pretty, the pace of life is gentle and the local people are friendly and helpful. Many of our guests return again and again to this lovely part of the world.

'The best click of a mouse button I've ever done!' 'We were absolutely delighted to find a place for once, which is far more than its blurb claims.' 'What a lovely surprise. Clean, warm and not spooky!' 'A wonderfully warm and romantic stay - only wish we could stay longer.' 'We'll be back.' 'As an American I can say that your barn has been my favorite accommodation in all 6 years I have lived in this country. We wouldn't change or add anything - comfortable beds, excellent shower, well lit, books and it's great to have a dishwasher. I'm going to be sorry to leave.'
