Polperro holiday chateau / country house: Polperro

Our party had a fab time in Polperro celebrating my husbands 50th birthday and New Year. There were 15 of us in total - mixed sex and ages ranging from 9 -50! We found the Manor House to be clean, comfortable and well maintained (apart from some cob webs in hard to reach areas!) We stayed in Winter and no-one complained of the cold even though the temperatures outside were freezing. (Games room & bar/snug very cold and need some heating) Logs available for open fire (to be paid for as an extra). Kids loved the hot tub - adults were too shy - of the freezing temperatures! Some of the rooms were not as special as others and some of the en-suites did not produce a good flow of water for showering - easily rectified by a quick trip down the corridor! Lounge does not seat 15 guests comfortably - but youngsters sat on floor and we all felt lounge furniture & TV's etc could do with updating - personally we felt Lounge and Dining room should be swapped around to allow more space - but assume in the Summer you would not be spending much time in either!. Location is excellent - both for local amenities and sight seeing. Most nights we all walked into Polperro for dinner/drinks - remember your torches - and avoids the need for anyone to drive unless they have mobility issues as the walk back up the hill is very demanding - especially after dinner and cider!! We walked the coastal path,visited Padstow, Watergate Bay, Polruan and Fowey, Looe and generally chilled! The blokes are keen on mountain biking and found the terrain demanding whilst the ladies enjoyed hot chocolates and browsing the local shops very satisfying! Overall we had a great time and as long as you are not too precious over contemporary decor; modern plumbing/bathrooms and technology you will too! Excellent pubs and restaurants in Polperro - all very friendly and welcoming - Blue Peter; The Old Mill House; Couch's; Crumplehorn - don't take your posh clothes/evening wear - some good walking boots; jeans; fleeces and waterproof jackets will suffice . Nearest large Tesco in St Austell - only 13 miles but takes a good 40 minutes to get to - so good idea to stock up when you see somewhere when you are out and about - remember you are in Cornwall and life is at a very much slower pace - e.g waiting for flocks of sheep to move from one field to another; tractors etc. It's actually very relaxing once you adapt and accept.......Enjoy - we certainly did!

The best christmas ever in this house. All bedrooms good size and the hot tub wonderful even in December. The kitchen is fantastically equipped for 15 people and there is plenty of room in the dining room. Plenty of walks along the coast to work off that christmas dinner
If you have ever dreamed of being the lady of the manor for a week, this is the place for you!

Taken with the cottage, this beautifully situated and very elegant but user-friendly house provided our extended family ( mostly adults + young adults/teenagers) with a fantastic homebase to explore the local area.
We did this mostly on foot ..along the coastal paths ...with short drives to NT cars parks just along the coast. Lantic Bay was the best. but super cream teas with organic meat available even closer.. and The Eden Project (over rated we thought) further away. We liked Fowey...attractive place to shop and eat..fun to take the pedestrian ferry across from Polruan.
The house's location on the very outskirts of the village was perfect (more or less surrounded by countryside - with direct access to cliff path for active walkers - over a couple of Cornish hedgerows). We could walk down to Polperro for local supplies everyday ( a friendly shopkeeper lent us a wheely thing for pulling these uphill) ..or to search out entertainment/meals in the evenings ( good music in pubs on summer weekends.)
The house itself has several lovely and large bedrooms overlooking the gardens down towards the sea...with some less special but perfectly functional rooms at the back ..ok for younger generation who may not value views.
The shared spaces lent themselves very well to multiple uses by different groups in bad weather ...and having the cottage was a real bonus...
The dining room proved excellent for wink murder at dinner and the the house itself - on a moonless night- perfect for games of murder in the dark! The grand piano was an unexpected bonus..we had a couple of great musical evenings..as were the games tucked away in a cupboard, including the killer 1500 jigsaw puzzle and table football.
The kitchen was a great place to sit around, morning long breakfast. on a rotational basis.. very well equipped generally ( although no wok).
And of course the hot tub ..taken over by the young early on in the week..and needing a clean before the end. Best later in the day when in the sun.
A super holiday retreat!
