Recently used for the filming of ‘Miss Potter’, a film about Beatrix Potter starring Renee Zellweger, Low Millgillhead offers three self catering Georgian houses within two acres of gardens in the small village of Lamplugh. The main house, Millgillhead, offers stylish accommodation for up to ten people. Croft House is a beautiful barn conversion, with accommodation for twelve. Rose Cottage sleeps four. Each house has its own garden and have been refurbished to high standards boasting the latest in modern convenience while maintaining the intimate features of the original features of the property. Within easy access of Lowswater (4 miles) and Ennerdale (4 miles) Low Millgillhead benefits from an idyllic location in the heart of the North Western lakes. There are plenty of walks from the village of Lamplugh making it an ideal location for groups or families who enjoy outdoor life.

The porch at Millgillhead leads to a dining room with seating for ten. The kitchen has a large range cooker, fridge, dishwasher, microwave and lots of storage space. There is a utility room next with washing machine, tumble drier and additional fridge. The sitting room is beautiful with an open fire and comfortable sofas and chairs to seat ten. Coal and firewood are provided to create the perfect atmosphere. There are a variety of board games for entertainment, as well as a wide screen TV with DVD player. There a five bedrooms – three twins (one of which is downstairs) and two doubles. Please note that one twin bedroom is accessed via the second double bedroom. There are two bathrooms plus an additional toilet. The grounds cover an acre and command views of the Lake District fells and mountains. There is a large garden to the back of the house as well as a lawned area with a stream to the front of the house. The house is heated by gas central heating. One pet is welcome.

Lamplugh is the perfect starting place to explore the Lake District. There are a variety of walks right from the front door, or Loweswater Lake is just four miles away, with Buttermere and Crummock just a mile or two beyond. In the opposite direction is Ennerdale Lake with its forest walks and mountain biking trails. Seven miles away is Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth. William Wordsworth's home is worth a visit, as is Jennings Brewery and Museum. There are plenty of antique shops and cafes, including Merienda which holds the occasional Jazz evening. There are a variety of pubs and smaller shops (butchers, bakers etc) as well as a Sainsburys.

Additional information about rental rates

  • We take full week bookings (Friday to Friday) throughout the year. Weekend & midweek bookings are taken in the off-peak Season (November through to Easter). A three night off-peak booking is £620-£650 (excluding Christmas, New Year and Half Term weeks).
  • We will hold provisional telephone bookings for a few days and confirm bookings on receipt of a deposit (as shown on the tariff sheet). Payment in full is to be made six weeks prior to arrival by cheque sent to Sally Fielding at Rivendell, Bassenthwaite, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4QP. You need to make your cheque payable to 'Low Millgillhead'. We also require a security deposit of £100 which will be returned to you after your holiday.

A true lakes retreat with historic feel

We stayed at Millgillhead in the summer and we had a really great time. The house is large and spacious with semi galleried landing and
an interesting and satisfying layout. The house was we thought of early georgian origin and has quality furnishings in period and the kitchen is fully stocked for 12 settings with pretty much every extra you need. There is a well kitted out ulitlity room off the kitchen and the dining room is off the kitchen so easy for prep and dinner. All of the bedrooms are a little different with character. The garden was also large and captivating with a lovely shallow stream. The village is rural and there are many walks from the door or nearby and we found This area of the Lakes to be magnificent. The children walked for hours without complaint up many hills! sailing at Lake Derwent Water and Coniston was also interesting as it was windy!. we hope to visit again soon as this was the holiday with a little difference.
