Northey Island is in the Blackwater Estuary - 2 miles by road from Maldon and a mile at high tide from Heybridge - a fun excursion to the pubs by either sailing or rowing dinghy. The island is approached by car across a causeway - the site of the Battle of Maldon in 991 commemorated in the famous poem. This causeway is covered by sea for four hours out of every twelve.

  • NOTE: From 1st January 2011 the rental per week in Low Season is GBP880 and in High Season, being 11th July to 19th September GBP1100. For a weekend, 3 nights, the rental is GBP660 in Low Season. For Christmas, New Year, and Bank Holidays for 4 nights the rental is GBP 990. Hirers can arrive on the Friday but are asked to leave before noon on the Monday or for 4 night weekends on the Tuesday.

There are only two houses on the island; the caretakers' cottage and the house which is available for holiday letting. This is an unusual house built by a previous owner, Sir Norman Angell, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, in the 1920's who was great uncle to the present tenants. Sir Norman's nephew gave the island to the National Trust in 1975 to be preserved as a Grade 1 Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the family retains the use of the house also making it available for chosen lets.

The house is built like a tower. Northey Island is totally secluded being about 60 acres at high tide and 400 acres at low tide. Access by the general public is limited, being only by appointment to those whose interests are scientific or educational. Apart from the house and grounds, the 60 acres comprise farmland. The rest is saltmarsh with masses of bird life (Brent Geese from Siberia over winter on the island). There are walks around the sea walls and in the creeks at low tide, the latter being excitingly muddy for the young!

I have holidayed at Northey Island with family many times over the past 12 years and would recommend it time and again, we all love it and have a wonderful time. The house has a wonderful olde world relaxed feeling, steeped in history and has always been spotlessly cleaned. What it lacks in the glamour of holidays abroad it more than makes up for in total relaxation and peace. From the moment you reach the causeway, you can literally hear the silence broken only by the sound of the native wildlife. The island is a paradise for children young or older, my 23yr old niece still loves it. They can explore and 'imagine' to their hearts content. When the tide is in you experience a wonderful isolation and freedom to sit and watch the world go by at the waters edge or go sailing/rowing in boats provided. When the tide is out you can completely walk round the island or venture off to do shopping or site seeing, various attractions are within easy reach. Night time brings excitement to the patient - bat watching, fantastic. If you never holiday anywhere else you really should go to Northey Island.
