Further afield are Chatsworth grounds, Edale (20 min drive) and the Penine Way in the High Peaks.

From Castleton you can do a circular walk to Mam Tor with stunning views in all directions. Ladybower Reservoir offers beautiful low and high level walks.

For cyclists there are many paths suitable for cycling, full details are available in the cottage information book, and cycles can be hired at Ladybower and other locations.

Local Attractions: Haddon Hall, the location 'Thornfield Hall', in the recent BBC 1 serialisation of 'Jane Eyre' is six miles from the cottage, and open to visitors April to October. (Check their website for opening times.)

Other nearby local attractions include Alton Towers, The Blue John Cavern, Eyam (the plague village), Bakewell (home of the famous tarts), and the splendour of Chatsworth House. The National Tramways Museum, steam railways and many other reminders of the industrial age make for fascinating days out. Cressbrook is at the centre of the Well Dressing Villages, this ancient pagan rite adopted by Christianity is celebrated in the area from June to September. Well dressing is a beautiful and delicate folk-art creating pictures made of flower petals to adorn the wells. The Cressbrook Silver Band, the oldest in the Country, performs regularly both in Cressbrook and adjacent villages.

The villagers own the local club, and welcome visitors. There are many local pubs and restaurants in the vicinity for relaxing after a hard days walking, should you be able to leave the view from the patio.

The nearby pub in Litton serves good pub food and very drinkable wines by the glass as well as the local ales. You can walk to the pub (1mile on the flat)

Excellent food and wines are served all day at the Monsal Head (1.5m) where you can get anything anytime, from burgers to a gourmet meal from 11AM till 9PM, in the Stables, which is casual and cheerful with log fire in winter, or more formal dining in the resturant, which can be booked. With views rival ours in Cressbrook, it gets v busy in summer on weekends at peak times.

Courses at Bakewell and Buxton offer panaramic views and welcome visitors, especially mid week.

Just wanted to say thankyou very much for our stay in your lovely cottage. Great cottage,
very comfortable, loved all the nice new modern fittings, etc. We had a couple of chilly nights so lit the fire - it was really cosy. Loved the view from the cottage over to Monsal Head and vice versa! Pat. */* Just a quick note to say thanks for the use of the cottage during the week! I managed to have a very relaxing time (despite the scorching weather). I especially appreciated the shower (might have to invest)! Kevin */* Thank you so much for a wonderful week!, the cottage is lovely and the location beautiful, My Dad was recently diagnosed with cancer and has been understandably down, he came along and really enjoyed himself. I really liked the way you have decorated it, it is a great base to go out from and so full of history, i can see why you find it hard to leave! Amanda

Monsal View

Review Submitted: July 20, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This cottage is extremely well equipped and maintained to the highest standard. The description regarding location, layout and facilities is accurate. The owner provides very good and friendly customer service.
I would recommend this property to friends and relatives.
Excellent walking from the door, with a daily local bus service to and from Bakewell. It is possible to cycle to Bakewell on the nearby Monsal Trail with its through the recently opened tunnel..
Train station at Buxton, with good connections to Manchester and Salford (shopping, art galleries etc). Near to Sheffield and easy driving distance to many places of interest (good info in the cottage).

Drop down the hill from the cottage, and in only a few minutes you are walking in Millers Dale, 'Water cum Jolly' is just round the corner on this walk, a beautiful spot, a nature reserve, best enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon/evening (after the day trippers have left) at this time you can enjoy the solitude. Carry on walking to Litton Mill then up Litton Slack then it is a short amble down-hill to the Cottage with terrific views all the way (Only takes about 45 minutes to an hour) This is my favorite place. Back at the cottage sit on the terrace and enjoy the views across to Monal Head. In the evening and the sound of the sheep dift up to the cottage while buzzerds 'meew' overhead.
We stay every year and cannot wait to get back.

My partner and I stayed at Monsal View for 3 months before finding more permanent accommodation in the area; we hated leaving. It is a wonderful cottage - warm, cosy and comfortable. The little touches are very thoughtful - ie dvds, games, books and tourist information. The location is superb - it was a treat to wake in the mornings and look out over the valley. I loved getting to know this beautiful area at the change of seasons - snow, daffodils, lambs. I recommend it strongly as an ideal holiday cottage for those who love walking; beauty and tranquillity. We even managed to spot badgers in the valley after a long chilly wait. I still want to explore the area and will return.

What a fantastic holiday!!!

Review Submitted: September 16, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
The cottage is gorgeous - beautifully appointed, well-maintained and the shower's sheer bliss especially after the lovely long walks we managed each day! The parking really isn't an issue and it's probably far quicker to park & walk than spend time doing 3-point turns in the drive.

Yes, it's a bit off the beaten track, but that's partly what attracted us. With the more than able assistance of an "award winning online supermarket" for the basics, we then enjoyed some lovely meals out. The Red Lion @ Litton, Little India @ Stoney Middleton and The Anchor @ Tideswell all served fantastic food at very reasonable prices and all with excellent service.

A great holiday if you want a get-away from it all type break. Not so good for staggering home from nightclubs, discos etc!

Best shower in all of England ! from Perth,WA

Review Submitted: September 30, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
It is worth staying at this excellently appointed cottage just for the shower ( which rates well above the 5 star hotel London hotel's shower we stayed at before coming to this part of our holiday).
After nine nights in the chaos of London this was a truly tranquil setting to spend a week with all the comforts and a kitchen to inspire even the most travel weary cook. Their are beautifull walks, cycling, histoiric buildings and interesting pubs to explore. Forget the 5 star spa hotel - this cottage and the surrounding unspoilt vistas will reinvigorate your soul!
