Details for Betony in Gloucestershire, England
This unique cottage is the self-contained East Wing of a 16th century farmhouse retaining many original features including rare oak mullion windows. It has its own drive with parking for 3 cars, and a large exclusive garden with stone-flagged private patio area. Entering through the original studded oak front door, you come to the kitchen - fully equipped with electric cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washer/dryer - and the charming conservatory/dining room overlooking the garden. This leads into the cosy sitting room, which was the original kitchen and has an impressive inglenook fireplace. Enclosed stone spiral stairs lead to the 1st floor, where the double bedrooms are found. The spiral stairs lead up past the large Edwardian-style bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and shower over, to the second floor bedroom with 3 single beds. On the ground floor is a further WC with wash basin. Betony is centrally heated throughout, with an additional gas fire in the conservatory.

| Notes: | Two cottages are single storey and particularly suitable for the infirm: Harebell (sleeps 2) is fully wheelchair accessible, and Campion has only 1 step inside. The others have varying numbers of steps; Betony is not suitable for the infirm, having a stone spiral staircase. Welcome baskets are provided on arrival containing bread, butter, jam, milk, eggs, fruit, biscuits and locally produced organic juice. Basics such as condiments, tea, coffee & sugar are provided, so you’ll have enough for a cuppa on arrival and your first breakfast. Prices include all bed linen, towels, heating and power, and logs or coal for the fire where appropriate. Betony has an open fire in an impressive inglenook fireplace, Meadowsweet a smokeless coal burning stove and Pimpernel a large log burner. All have full central heating. |
On site activities
We have an all-weather tennis court (proper tennis shoes essential), croquet lawn and putting green, and you can play badminton or boules on the lawn. The enclosed children's play area has swings, slides & a climbing frame. For rainy days there is an indoor games room with pool table, table football, table tennis, air hockey, darts, and some children's toys and ride-ons. There are usually sheep grazing in the orchard, and plenty of bird-watching opportunities with swallows, nuthatches, wrens, woodpeckers, chaffinches and dozens of other birds frequenting the gardens and orchard. If you're lucky you may spot one of the badgers that visit most nights - their run can be seen behind Betony. You can help collect eggs from our hens, feed the ducks and stroke the friendly rabbits and cats. A public footpath runs alongside the farm, and leads through bluebell woods to the hamlet of Gatcombe, from where the path gives lovely walks along the bank of the Severn in either direction.
Local Pubs and Restaurants
There are many good pubs and restaurants and in particular our local pub, the 'Red Hart at Awre' is one of the Forest's best and is recommended in all the leading pub guides. Good value, imaginative food is served everyday with excellent wines and beers; dogs welcome in garden, children welcome in restaurant. The Cock Inn in Blakeney, 1 mile away, also serves good food and has a large garden for children & dogs. There is a good range of take-away foods in Lydney nearby (3.5 miles), as well as Tesco, Coop and Somerfield supermarkets. Blakeney (1 mile) has an excellent open-all-hours local shop that sells just about everything.
Local Activity and attractions.
The Forest of Dean offers unrivalled opportunities for walking, cycling and mountain biking (hire bikes available nearby), horse riding, canoeing on the river Wye, Quad bike racing and paintballing. An excellent leisure complex at Lydney has a pool and gym, there are also many local Golf courses and fishing lakes. Attractions include a preserved steam railway (Thomas the Tank Engine visits 3 times a year), unique 'one man' coal mines, Clearwell Caves - Roman iron ore mines, river cruises, two vineyards, several museums and an acclaimed Bird of Prey Centre. For small children there are two excellent soft-play centres, one of which (the Dick Whittington centre at Longhope) also has go-karts and farm animals. For over 10s the 'Go Ape' high wire forest adventure is very popular.
Other Activities Canoeing, archery, clay pigeon, paintball, llama trekking, Go Ape

Review Submitted: May 14, 2008, Date of stay: May, 2008
Our stay at Oatfield Farm was fantastic, the properties are beautifully prepared and Kate and Alison the perfect hosts.
Our cottage, Betony, was part of the main farmhouse and slept seven. The main bedroom, with bathroom en-suite, boasted a large four-posted bed and was tastefully and elegantly furnished, as was the rest of the cottage.
Our friends, who rented several of the other cottages at the same time as us, were all full of praise for the clean and well furnished properties.
There is a wonderful outside play area for children, with plenty of safe climbing structures, and also a well-appointed games room for those wetter days.
Can't wait to go back for a longer stay.
