The property is located in one of the Chiltern Hills most beautiful valleys in a quiet rural setting. Originally built as a wing to spectacular 18th Century barns, the stables have been converted to a very high standard, retaining many of the original features. Well equipped, the property provides comfort & convenience whilst enjoying privacy in its own walled courtyard with vines and colourful plants.The setting is rural and peaceful with our ducks and chickens wandering about. The Old Stables is inspected annually and is awarded a 4 star rating from the English Tourist Board.

Wellplace is a small hamlet near Ipsden, itself a small village, about 5 miles east of the historic market town of Wallingford. Wallingford is about 10 miles downstream of Oxford. The cottage is located in an area designated as of outstanding natural beauty. Our visitors find the cottage an ideal base for exploring the rich history in the area, and trips to London, the Cotswolds,and Shakespeare country.

Notes: Although centrally heated there is also a log burning stove for cosy evenings in Autumn or Winter.(logs are provided free of charge)The Staircase to the upstairs bedroom is very steep and elderly or infirm people may find this a problem. Children love the upstairs bedroom which has its own TV and video player. Stair gates are available.The other bedroom is downstairs and is easily accessible.We provide some local guides and maps and dozens of leaflets on places of interest. We also provide a number of videos, hopefully with something of interest for everyone.

The area is a walker’s paradise with the famous Ridgeway nearby for the serious or several delightful walks on the doorstep for the more casual. Also popular with cyclists. Excellent base for touring the ancient Thames-side towns of Henley, Wallingford, Dorchester & Abingdon all within a few miles. Oxford (c12 miles), Windsor (c24 miles), London (c45 miles), Stratford Upon Avon (c48 miles), Cotswolds (c25miles). Close to rail links to London & West country, 10 miles from M4 & M40, Heathrow 28 miles. Horse riding, golf, boat hire available locally. The property is strictly non smoking.

Nice even off-season

Greatly enjoyed a short break in November '08, despite fog & cooler weather. Property is charming & very nicely furnished, so we even enjoyed simply sitting by the fire & viewing old videos one rainy evening! Central location allowed for daytrips to Stonehenge/Salisbury and also Warwick Castle/Stratford-upon-Avon, and even London. Pub in Stoke Row (Cherry Tree Inn) is very good & just 10 minutes away (by car, which is pretty much essential). Hope to return in summer for Chilterns walks & boating.

A peaceful retreat

The cottage was lovely especially the stable area in the main bedroom ! It was clean and well-maintained . There was a very welcome tea tray in the well fitted out kitchen .
The cottage was cosy - we stayed when there was a sprinkling of snow but we were very warm . The stove was easy to use and added a little extra ambiance .
The countryside around was beautiful ; we went in the autumn when the trees were dropping their leaves and the wooded areas were lovely to walk through .
We saw the owners on the last day and they were very friendly and helpful .
If you are being picky we did find it a distance to get anywhere ie Oxford , Seer Green and we did not find the local shops/pubs walkable .....but that could be down to us ! Perhaps we walked in the wrong direction !!
We also found it a little stange at first to have the shower room connected to the kitchen and living room but that soon ceased to worry us !
Generally we were really pleased we had chosen it and would recommend it to others .

A beautiful property ,full of character and exquisitely maintained. Our hosts were extremely hospitable, will definitely return some day.
