Further details for this holiday barn rental in Pillaton, United Kingdom

At Home, Country Houses & Cornish gardens: At home – a 14' trampoline and an adventure playground with 2 towers linked by a bridge; a trapeze, suspended tyre swing, baby swing and wooden swing. Get to the towers using the cargo net, climbing wall, or (for shorter legs) sturdy stairs. There is also a 3m wave slide and a sandpit. We are within easy reach of some spectacular National Trust properties and other gardens open to the public. The riverside estate and spectacular gardens of the 15th century Cotehele House is 4 miles away. The splendid Mount Edgcumbe (16th century), described by Samuel Pepys in 1683 as 'the most beautiful place as was ever seen' is some 10 miles drive. The award-winning lost gardens of Heligan and the stunning world-renowned Eden project are both less than an hour away, as is Lanhydrock, described as 'one of the most fascinating late 19th-century houses in England'. The cottages include in their information packs directions, opening times and contact details for these and other attractions

Activities available locally: For the adventurous, 4x4 driving, clay pigeon shooting and archery are available in nearby Callington. Coarse fishing and pony riding are available locally, while nearby Siblyback offers fly fishing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. Walkers are spoilt for choice, from local walks in the Tamar and Lynher valleys, to the rugged delights of Bodmin and Dartmoor, as well as the coastal walks. For total relaxation, St Mellion offers a Spa, and has a creche for small children so you can have a stress-free massage. For children there is loads to do, from the Donkey Park at St Annes Chapel (which has a great indoor soft-play area and indoor rides for rainy days) to the Fairy Wood at Carnglaze Caverns (a fascinating old slate mine, open to the public). There is a monkey sanctuary and an owl sanctuary towards Looe, and Plymouth has a host of indoor and outdoor activities, including the ever popular National Marine Aquarium (complete with shark tank!).

Beaches: The South coast enjoys some beautiful coastline. The coast is about 10 miles away and there is a wide choice of beaches, from the more traditional golden sand bucket-and-spade type beaches of Cawsand and Kingsand, to the lovely long beach walks with interesting rock formations and rock pools of Downderry and Seaton. There is also a lovely country park at Seaton. If you want more rugged cliff top walks try Rame Head, where you can walk out to an abandoned chapel on the promontory. Alternatively, save your legs and view the coast from a boat. Boat cruises are available from Plymouth to Calstock, with regular tours of the Naval dockyards and a ferry to Saltash. There are also river cruises between Calstock, Bere Alston and Cotehele Quay and a cruise route to Weir Head and Morwellham Quay.

Golf: The barns are ideally situated for the keen golfer. We are less than 2 miles from the internationally renowned St Mellion, which has 2 18 hole courses - the championship Nicklaus course (6626 yds, par 72) and the Old course (5927 yds, par 70). China Fleet (6551 yds, par 72) is less than 4 miles away and has spectacular views over the River Tamar. Launceston (6374 yds, par 70), Lostwithiel (5928 yds, par 72) and Lanhydrock are all within 15-20 miles, and other renowned courses such as St Enodoc at Rock and Trevose at Padstow are within easy reach. We can help with booking tee times, and provide a full list with contact details and course fees for all these courses and more in each of the cottages. As we are close to Devon, the courses at Yelverton, Tavistock and Dartmouth are also all within easy reach (30-45 minutes drive).

Other Activities: Our own adventure playground

Rural peace with every luxury!

Molly's Mum Kingston, Surrey, UK
Review Submitted: October 31, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We have just returned from Heather Barn, where we spent a wonderful Autumn half term with our 15 and 12 year old daughters.
The barn is pristine with beautiful decor. The open plan layout works very well and is very family friendly. There was wood everywhere which looks and smells amazing. Almost Scandinavian and very different from some of the other musty, fusty cottages we have been to in the past.
We enjoyed the selection of holiday reading, and re-discovered Scrabble thanks to the big chest full of board games. The girls happily watched DVDs and all their favourite programmes on TV.
The kitchen is really well equipped and brand new! The under-floor heating kept us cosy.
The bathrooms were lovely too. We loved the delicious bath products and the big fluffy dressing gowns which made us feel like we were staying at a luxurious spa.The "wet-room" which was en suite to our room was beautifully finished and completely open-plan which I think would make it perfect for you if you are in a wheel chair. The only slight disadvantage being that it was a litle difficult to keep the floor dry, although the floor was totally non-slip.
We made the most of the fresh air with days out on the beaches at Looe and Downderry. When it rained we went to the cinema at Plymouth and had a great day's shopping at Trago Mills at Liskeard.
The great pub food and cream teas are going to take a little bit of time to work off, but well worth it! The food just down the road at the Weary Monk was good and wholesome (if a little pricey).
The owners couldn't have been more helpful in terms of answering questions before we travelled and also when we were at Heather Barn - their own house is just a walk away. Close enough that should there be a problem they are on hand, but far enough away that you have privacy.
All in all, this was a great getaway - the perfect antidote to city living! I would have no hesitation in recommending Heather Barn, especially if you want to blow those city cobwebs away and put the roses back in your cheeks.!
