The rest of Cornwall!:
Because the Lizard is on the end of the Lizard Peninsula, when viewed on a map it looks as though the Lizard is too far from the rest of Cornwall to use as a base. In fact you can get to the furthest parts of Cornwall from the Lizard within an hours drive time, most areas are within 30- 45 minutes drive. The A3083, which is the main road to and from the Lizard is excellent and direct, Helston is the nearest major town and is only 10-15 minutes away.
Cornish Choughs:
The Cornish Chough is an incredibly rare bird that has in recent years returned to the Lizard to breed, at the time of writing this (May 2005) there was at least one breeding pair on the Lizard. They are highly protected and are viewed around the clock. Choughs do not nest anywhere else in the UK.
They are recognisable by their orange/red claws and beak set against black plumage, and their beautiful smooth swooping form of flight. The Cornish Choughs along with a massive range of other birds, animals and sea life, combine to attract naturalists and bird watchers from afar, who join with the botanists and geologist in the unique delight of this unique location.
Serpentine Rock and Geology:
Serpentine is unique to the Lizard, and is a rock, which has surfaced as a result of massive earth movements over hundreds of millions of years, it has a beautiful mottled green/orange/red colour which can mimic the skin of a Lizard, hence the name of the Lizard village. This rock is highly desirable when sculpted and polished. This rock can be seen in the cliffs and paths of the Lizard, but is protected, in that outlets require licences and are subject to strict quotas. Craftsmen can be seen sculpting the rock into beautiful creations in a number of charming outlets in and around the Lizard.
Apart from serpentine, the massive eruptions, earth movements and the tearing of the peninsula from the continent hundreds of millions of years previous create a geologists dream, and they are always of interest even to the casual observer.
Golf:
Mullion hosts an excellent 18 hole course with club and bar etc. and benefits from beatiful surrounding sea views. This is a quality course and will generally require booking in advance.
Other Activities:
