Further details for this holiday house rental in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom

Teversal Manor & Gardens: Teversal Manor was the dowerhouse of Lady Canarvon and is believed to have been the inspiration for D. H. Lawrence's Wragby Hall in Lady Chatterley's Lover. The impressive gardens at Teversal include to the west of the house the remnants of a walled pear orchard which is now a beautiful ornamental pond garden. This area has its own microclimate that enables many unusual and tender plants to survive, and is landscaped with a series of mounds that give rise to many different views and aspects. The visitor can stroll along the walled border between the rows of lavender- siit and view the panorama from the elevated gazebo - work their way round the garden to an unusual ornamental vegetable maze surrounded by a pergola walkway. The impressive terraces at the rear of the house include a south facing top terrace originally thought to be a croquet lawn. This leads down to a further three terraces once described as .....remains of a hanging garden on a magnificent scale were existing in 1831

History: One of the few descriptions of the house interior (from Wrights Directory) describes white embossed stucco frescoes in the dining parlour depicting rural scenery, hawking the story of Actaeon turned into a stag by Diana. These are sadly no longer in evidence. The Manor House had been severely damaged by fire in the past and many of its interesting features supposedly plundered and removed to nearby Hardwick Hall. The house had fallen into a state of decay by the end of the 18th Century until it was renovated by Hon Henrietta Anne Howard Molyneux who in 1830 married Lord Porchester who was to become the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon. Lord Carnarvon financed the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Up by the house was a croquet lawn and to the east a grass tennis court. Here her son Aubrey Herbert, the dashing Secret Service Agent who was the model for John Buchan's novel Greenmantle played games with literary visitors like Virginia Woolf and reputedly D. H. Lawrence.

The Gatehouse overlooks the pretty church of St. Katherine's and the Manor Green.

Other Activities: Ten pin bowling.

The Gatehouse, Teversal Manor

Yvonne R Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
Review Submitted: June 2, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We arrived early and were very impressed. The owner had provided freshly baked bread, milk, butter, pickles, biscuits, tea and coffee. What a lovley touch.

The house was immaculately clean, with bedding and plenty of towels supplied. The bedrooms are well equipped with the exception of the ground floor bedroom, which did not have bedside tables or a chair in the room to lay clothing on. The beds in all of the rooms were extremely comfortable.

The bathrooms were clean but could do with more shelving for storage, particularly the shower room upstairs.

The house has underfloor heating which works well.

The lounge was equipped with tv, free channels and dvd player. The is wireless internet access in the house.

The kitchen was very well equipped although the exterior of the oven gets very hot when the oven is in use which is a danger for young children.

The gardens of the manor house are currently closed to the public which was fantastic for us as the children in the party could play there safely. The gardens are well maintained and spacious. There was a gas barbecue which worked well after an intial clean.

The owner was very helpful and sorted out any problems quickly. (nothing major, just a couple of little problems with appliance and maintenance issues) He also provided advice on what to see in the surrounding area. There were plenty of tourist information leaflets and take away menus in the house which we made good use of. We also arrange a Tesco internet shop to be delivered,

There are some lovely walks around the Teversal trails. I would recommend the walk to Hardwick Hall and the Hardwick Inn which takes about an hour from the house. There is also a pub nearby called the Carnarvon Arms which does lovely food and the service is second to none in the restaurant there.

I would certainly recommend this propery to a friend and would have no hesitation in staying there again.

The Gate House at Teversal Manor

TRACY JO Loughborough, Leicestershire
Review Submitted: November 17, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
We stayed at The Gatehouse for a week in October, 6 adults and 4 children aged between 7 and 12. There was ample living space, and the bedrooms were all a good size. The children shared the attic room and had a great time. The House is very comfortably furnished to a high standard, bed linen and ample towels were provided. There are plenty of settees, and quiet areas to sit around the house, the beds were all comfortable and the house was well heated. We made every evening meal except on one night and the kitchen was stocked with a wide range of crockery and equipment.
The information for travel to gatehouse was accurate, and we were recommended a local pub for a meal which was well worthy of the recommendation.
The house was clean, with sufficient cleaning products, light bulbs etc.
The friendly owners of the house, Janet and John live at Teversal Manor and were available if required.
The house has been renovated to a high standard whilst retaining many of the original features such as beams and hand rails, whilst having modern conveniences such as a dish washer/washing machine and under floor heating.
We travelled to attractions in the peak district within half an hour and there are some lovely walks around the village.
Most of the major supermarkets are within a few miles in the car.
There are National trust properties nearby also.
This house met all of our expectations and we had a great week together as a family celebrating a ruby wedding anniversary.
The house is in the grounds of Teversal Manor, which has beautiful gardens open to the public, with a tea room which I would recommened to any one especiallly keen gardeners.
The house may not be suitable for mobile babies or toddlers because of the slate flooring, and stairs, but older children loved the open space in and outside of the house.
The house is set within a very pretty village, close to the church, chiming clock and nightly owls included!
We all loved our stay in this lovely house, and would happily return.
