Further details for this holiday house rental in South Somerset, United Kingdom

The Old Smithy: The Old Smithy is an individual and interesting 18th Century Hamstone Cottage. Formerly part of a farm, the dairy buildings now form the main house the original black smiths has been retained as a workshop. Needless to say it has enjoyed considerable extension and upgrading! Set in a quarter of an acre of fully enclosed, well stocked and private gardens, this family cottage has a host of character features and lies in a quiet residential area on the southern outskirts of the Market Town of Crewkerne.

The local Hamstone used in the area is a beautiful, rich gold colour and incredibly thickly laid in construction making it cool in summer and snug in winter. The cottage is mainly laid to carpet and enjoys double glazing and gas fired central heating throughout.

The Old Smithy is a family home, providing very spacious, comfortable, family accommodation.

The Garden: The Garden is very private and mainly laid to lawn covering about 1 quarter of an acre to include main garden (ideal for football and cricket!) a children’s garden and a BBQ area (adult dining & sunbathing!). A combination of ground based electric and solar shrub and boarder lighting creates a Mediterranean feel on summer evenings – combined with a gas BBQ, chimera fire and a bit of background heat from the patio heater makes al fresco dining an option for even the freshest of summer evenings.

The BBQ area is a fantastic sun trap, together with the comfortable garden furniture and peaceful surroundings, ensures relaxation for all!

The garden has two small Ponds, mature boarders, apple trees and a variety of evergreen and perennial shrubs which makes this a wonderfully private and spacious area to enjoy outdoor living.

Additional Accommodation: The Folly was originally a garage (situated at the bottom of the drive on the edge of the garden) now converted into a self contained double room with en-suite facilities, double bed, large dressing table, two comfortable chairs, cupboard and drawers. Also with the added luxury of a wall mounted TV with SKY feed from main House. There is a concertinaed door to walk-in wardrobe with hanging space and drawers. The Folly also has a fully fitted kitchenette area with fridge / freezer, sink, microwave and two oven hobs.

An exercise room containing a Reebock Treadmill is available for your use together with a wall mounted TV with DVD.

Our holiday heaven

Review Submitted: August 16, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My wife and I, 3 children(6,10 and 12 yrs old) and our 2 mothers stayed at this lovely property for a week. It wasn't quite the rural setting that we were expecting but in no way were we dissappointed. On the Sunday afternoon I cooked on the bbq, the girls relaxed with their wine and the children played cricket in the large rear garden. It felt like you were miles from anywhere, very private rear garden and the children loved the shed full of toys. We spent many an afternoon just relaxing in the back yard.

My mother in law stayed in the folly (granny flat) which gave her some privacy. Upstairs in the attic the children had their own special place with a wide variety of games, television and dvd player. Great for the parents as we could relax and the children could do their own thing if we weren't out doing things.

All the rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. We found it to be ideal when there was 3 generations staying under the same roof. Cooking facilities were excellent and met all our needs. Very handy having an upstairs and downstairs bathroom. The owners were only a phone call away for any questions that we had, which was reassuring.

Crewcerne was a lovely rural village with a great little museum, adequate shopping facilities for all we needed and some fabulous little pubs. Quiz night at the Royal Oak and great value meals at Oscars wine bar.

We found it to be very central comfortabley doing Weymouth, Lyme Regis, Cheddar gorge and CDreely Adventure Park at Exeter on seperate days out. Coming from Northampton it was also very easy to incorporate a visit to Stonehenge on the way through.

All in all great place for families for a holiday.

A Wonderful Family Christmas

Review Submitted: January 15, 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
The excellent web site for The Old Smithy immediately attracted us - it was so well laid out, full of helpful details and the photographs showed it to be an extremely spacious and attractive property. Reading the reviews left by previous tenants increased our feeling that this would be ideal for us - all mentioned three generations of family sharing the spacious accommodation - which echoed our situation. The only difference being that theirs were all summer lettings.

On contacting the owner, Mrs Withers, to enquire as to whether a Christmas booking would be possible, she assured us that it would and confirmed that both the house and the Folly would be beautifully warm, with a woodburning stove in the sitting room, central heating radiators plus additional freestanding warm air heaters should these be necessary. She also added that the house would be decorated for Christmas - with a tree and lights.

We are all just SO pleased that we chose The Old Smithy! We felt it a privilege that the owners allowed us to stay in their home with access to their children's many toys, books, DVDs etc and the lovely family photos on the walls - the three boys absolutely loved the attic bedroom/playroom and enjoyed letting off steam periodically with their fathers in the huge garden, playing various ball games and generally enjoying the good weather and fresh air.

The Old Smithy is a delightful, unusual, comfortable and historic family home with many quirky features, excellent cooking and dining facilities and comfortable seating areas in the sitting room and conservatory.

The house was indeed beautifully decorated for Christmas - a tree in the entrance hall, a huge decorated tree in the sitting room, masses of twinkling lights throughout the sitting room, kitchen, dining room and conservatory - an absolute delight!

In addition, Mrs Withers was extremely helpful in the days leading up to our stay, sending additional information with 'Tips to help you enjoy your stay' and a list of 'Places to visit, eat and go out for a drink' and giving us two telephone numbers to contact at any time should we experience any difficulties.

We would have no hesitation in recommending The Old Smithy to family and friends and indeed would hope to stay there again ourselves some time in the future and explore the surrounding countryside more fully.

Great base for a large family

Review Submitted: September 9, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Three generations spent a very busy week at The Old Smithy and had a great time. The house had a great layout downstairs with plenty of space for us all to be together (6 adults, 3 kids). The garden is huge and very private despite the houses close by - unfortunately the british weather was not on our side to make the most of it!
The house was a good location to get to many local attractions - the Fleet Air Arm Museum was great, as was the wildlife park at Cricket St Thomas. We also enjoyed days at West Bay - the cafe in the old railway station is a must - delicious cake at very reasonable prices!! Burton Bradstock was not such a success - the cafe on the beach was VERY expensive.
All in all this rental made a great base for lots of days out and was very fairly priced. A great week was had by all!

Great for families

Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
This house is a warm, family house, clean and well-maintained.The description on the website was very accurate and the information provided by the owners was incredibly detailed and helpful. The house has a great deal of space for a large family plus extra visitors and is amazingly equipped.

The garden is a lovely spot though the fact that it is slightly away from the main house made it difficult to keep an eye on the children without someone being with them.

It is a characterful old house, so the stairs may not be suitable for a newly-walking toddler. You can also tell that dogs normally live here so if you are a non-doggy person it may be slightly off putting!

All in all it was an excellent property and it is likely that we would come back again!

A lovely time was had by all!

Review Submitted: June 4, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
A perfect property and location for a family holiday. The house is situated on the edge of town meaning that we were no more than 5 minutes drive from the local amenities. This included the local swimming pool which we used twice and our 5 year old swam his first strokes in! being on the edge of town we were also no more than 10 minutes walk from trees and fields, as well as having a multitude of country vilages within a 10 minute drive if country walks and pub lunches were the order of the day.
We visited the beach at Lyme Regis and the recommended beach with the Hive cafe, both were less than 45 minutes drive away. We also went to Sherborne Castle, Monkey World, Cheddar Gorge and Longleat, none of which were more than 1.5 hours away, so the children did not get fractious in the car.
The house was lovely too, my mother came with us and stayed in The Folly so she had some privacy, but she seemed to spend most of her time at home in the sun drenched conservatory or sitting in the large garden. The children loved the garden and a lot of fotball and cricket was played in the early mornng and late evening. When not playing in the garden they were ensconced in the loft conversion/playroom, watching sky tv or playing the playstation without hassle from their parents. Ideal for teenagers, although the roof is very low!
Al round a great place for a family holiday.
