ASTONDENE is a comfortable and well-loved family house right on the sea in the pretty and traditional market town of Southwold. Wake up with the morning sun and watch the ever-changing sea from your bed or take your morning coffee down onto the beach. Later, stroll to one of the many pubs in the town for lunch. Southwold is an unspoiled English seaside town and Astondene reflects that - it's perfect either for a bucket-and- spade holiday with children (the beach is literally a pebble-throw away) or as a place to be alone and think and work (many writers have stayed here). Astondene’s owners (both also writers!) have gone out of their way to make sure that the house is stylish but not precious, well-equipped and cosy.

The result is endless sunny days and huge skies - the beaches are wide and flat, the sea calm and the landscape open. Dotted along the coast are the picturesque towns of Walberswick, Aldeburgh (home of the Benjamin Britten Festival) and Snape Maltings. Southwold itself boasts a pier and a boating lake and just up the coast are Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, packed with seaside attractions. Or use Southwold as base to explore further inland, stopping at each of the tiny villages that dot the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside. Southwold itself has become the fashionable place in the area to eat and shop - there are more bistros, restaurants and gastro pubs than you can count, and every day a new clothes shop or deli seems to open on the High Street.

Notes: Astondene sits on East Cliff, bathed in morning sunshine in summer, arguably one of Southwold’s most central and picturesque locations. The ground floor is one large L-shaped room: sitting room area at the front, with digital TV, round dining table at the back, kitchen round the corner. The room was rebuilt and redecorated in 2009 and the kitchen was entirely renewed - new units, fridge, gas-hob-electric-oven, very quiet dishwasher. Not to mention the world's best fish and chip shop just down the road! The lower ground floor is also one gigantic room, packed with (full-size) bunk beds, complete with TV, video player and table football. Our children go down there, emerging only for meals (see above). Upstairs: the tranquil master bedroom with stunning sea views, bathroom with bath, toilet and electric power shower. There is also a spare portable TV and DVD.
