Things to do in the Central Florida Keys

The Central Florida Keys are home to part of the only living coral reef in North America, the Sombrero Reef, just a few miles offshore Marathon. The scuba diving is absolutely sensational on the reef, with marine life absolutely thriving in almost perfect conditions. Boot Key Harbour is an absolutely fantastic place from which to organise scuba diving trips, as well as a whole range of other water sports.

The marine life is always close to the hearts and minds of those who live in the Central Florida Keys. Sailing, power boating and deep sea fishing excursions are highly popular and great fun. Fishing holidays in the Central Florida Keys are particularly rewarding, as some of the largest billfish and tuna ever landed have been caught in the waters surrounding the Florida Keys. During the summer months, dolphins are regularly seen in the area, and you can often see them just offshore from a beach villa in the Central Florida Keys.

The Crane Point Hammock Reserve is a huge attraction for anyone staying in Central Florida Keys accommodation. Within the reserve is a wonderful Wild Bird Centre, as well as the Museum of Natural History and the historic site of Adderley Town.

Places to visit in the Central Florida Keys

Stretched across three separate keys, a holiday rental in Marathon places you right in the cultural, sporting and geographical centre of the Florida Keys. The famous sands of Sombrero Beach attract visitors from many miles. The beautifully preserved tropical hardwood grove in Crane Point is well worth exploration from anywhere in Marathon.

Key Colony Beach is a couple of miles east from Marathon, along the awe-inspiring piece of engineering that is the US Highway 1. Key Colony Beach is a remarkable haven of activity, offering a city golf course, tennis courts and some excellent walking and cycling trails, as well as the excellent beaches, vast range of world class water sports facilities and numerous cultural attractions within the city.

Weather in the Central Florida Keys

The climate of the Florida Keys is perfect for year round scuba diving, fishing and beach holidays. The summer months see average monthly temperatures reach around 32˚C, whilst even the coldest month, January, sees temperatures averaging over 20˚C for the month.

Cheap flights to the Central Florida Keys

Although there is an airport on Marathon Key, the Florida Keys Marathon Airport (MTH), there are currently no direct flights from the UK, and this does not look likely to change in the near future. Flights do arrive into Marathon from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Tampa (TPA), which receives direct flights from Gatwick (LGW), provided by British Airways. Alternatively, you can drive along the amazing network of bridges from Miami International Airport (MIA) in just over an hour.
