Best shelling beach in the US

2/3 of Sanibel Island is a world-class bird preserve, and has recovered from the 2004 hurricane. This house backs to a lake, with a great egret who comes to beg at your back door. You can walk across the street to a long, white sand beach with the best shelling in the US. The pet-friendly house is fully furnished, complete with champagne glasses and two bicycles. My own dog loves to take sunrise walks and I encourage other pets to enjoy the tranquillity of this community -- no fast food restaurants allowed.

Pets, children, even mother-in-laws

The house has terrazo floors and Florida casual furniture which makes it suitable for pets and children. Mother-in-laws can take the separate guest room and bath. UK pets can now be taken to the US and returned to the UK if prior requirements are met (including computer chip implant). Sanibel beaches have no restrictions other than requiring the pets to be on leash at all times with owners picking up after them.

Sanibel attractions

Sanibel has two professional resident theaters and a very active cultural life, including such artists as Gil Shaham and the Jerusalem String Quartet in season. The New York Times offers home delivery, and the London Times is available at Bailey's General Store. The island high season (Feb-March) sees population swell to 20,000 but it is only 7,000 at other times. It has very good restaurants but few night spots. A jazz club is about as swinging as we get.

Near-by excursions

Captiva is adjacent to Sanibel, and is home to more beaches and lovely restaurants, although hurricane damage is still evident there. The Everglades are with a two hour drive, and a hovercraft offers day-trips to Key West. Naples (45 minutes south) has a quaint old town area. Orlando and Disneyworld are about a five hour drive, and I can rent you a condo there for a week if you wish.
