Morbihan, France is the middle of the five departments of Brittany, North France. Morbihan is a famous site for its impressive megalithic sites, which predate the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge in Britain. The area is dotted with menhirs and dolmens, the origins of which are still not certain. Many believe they are ancient maps of constellations, some that they are an early calendar and others that they are memorials, but the mysterious rocks are certainly impressive. Things to do on holiday in Morbihan

Morbihan has a long and fascinating history. The megalithic site of Carnac is celebrated as one of the finest, and is thought to date back as far as 5000BC. There are also castles from the Hundred Years War at Josselin and Pontivy, and the World War II submarine pens in Lorient, which have been magnificently preserved.

There is a rich golfing heritage here too. The golf course at Golf de Baden is considered one of the toughest in the area, but there are plenty of courses to suit every player, and within easy access of French gites in Morbihan.

Vannes remains a medieval town at heart with ramparts, half timbered houses and the Cathedral quarter of the city, based around the impressive Cathedral St Pierre. The towns of Pontivy and Rochefort en-Terre also aid the medieval feel of the department, with crocked stone streets and magnificent squares.

Auray is a very pretty port town, and welcomes thousands of Christian pilgrims each year to Sainte-Anne-d’Auray. This is also one of the best places in Morbihan to go sailing, or take a cruise around the islands of Morbihan.

No one is entirely sure how many islands lie in the Gulf of Morbihan. This is mainly due to the differing definitions of an island. Is a piece of land which is cut off from the mainland at high tide considered an island? Because of this, there are somewhere between 40 and 365 islands in the Gulf.

Quiberon is Morbihan’s premium beach resort town. All the gites and villas in Quiberon are located on a slender peninsular, so has a huge number of golden beaches to offer.

The summer in Morbihan is warm, benefiting from the effects of the Golf Stream. Average temperatures are around 25?C, but winters are wet, and temperatures drop to an average of about 5?C.

Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries both offer crossings from the south coast of England to Morbihan. Alternatively, Rennes Airport (ZFJ) is less than an hour from most of the UK, and Flybe, RyanAir and British Airways provide cheap flights from Southampton (SOU), Stansted (STN), Gatwick (LGW), Luton (LTN), Birmingham (BHX) and Exeter (EXT) Airport.
