The apartments are comprised of recently remodelled suites of rooms, each with a private outdoor patio, nestled in a complex of medieval buildings. The suites are all located within the remnants of the ancient walls of the medieval town centre next to the magnificent 12th century Clunic priory church of Notre Dame which was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998. We have made every effort to maintain the antiquity of these charming two bedroom units during renovation. Modern bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms make the units an ideal place to relax while exploring the region. While staying with us you will be a short walk to several bakeries, butcher shops, bars, restaurants and other amenities all within the medieval town centre. In addition to wine tasting and sightseeing you can spend your days walking or cycling the many trails in the area the best of which run along the Canal Lateral a la Loire. There is also the opportunity to travel down the Loire by kayak or canoe.

This suite is in a separate building at the rear of our complex of buildings next to the church. The suite can be accessed from the main floor on Grande Rue or from a private entrance off the Benedictine Park. There are three floors, a private courtyard and terrace. There are wonderful views of the church from each of the rooms. The suite has electric heating. The unit has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and sleeps six. On the ground floor is the courtyard and kitchen/eating area. The middle floor has a sitting room, with a separate bedroom and double bed with bathroom. The top floor has a bedroom with 2 twin beds and a bathroom. The middle floor and the top floor both have terraces with views of the church.

La Charité-sur-Loire - an excellent base from which to discover the picturesque, medieval towns of Burgundy. The ancient hilltop village of Sancerre is 25km away. Nevers with its Ducal Palace and faience (pottery) 35 km. The Morvan (Burgundy) has lakes and forests (35km). Magny-Cours (45km) - F1 Automobile and motorcycle races. Gothic cathedrals built between the 12th and 13th centuries and beautiful half-timbered houses in Auxerre, Vezelay, Bourges (50 km). In 2 hours or less you can visit the many wonderful chateaux in the Loire Valley - Amboise, Angers, Azay-le-Rideau, Blois, Chambord, Chenonceaux, Cheverny and Villandry. La Charité-sur-Loire is located between the red wine vineyards of Burgundy and the white wine regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire. Paris is only 1 hour and 45 minute drive on auto route A77. You can leave La Charité-sur-Loire at 7:30am and arrive when the stores are opening, enjoy a full day of sightseeing and shopping and be home in time for dinner.

Notes: There are four bicycles for rent on a first come first serve basis for both vacation rentals. The rental is 10 euros per week for each bike. There is car parking in front of the vacation rental for loading and unloading. This parking is also free from 7:00pm to 9:00am each night. There is also plenty of free unlimited parking behind the church which is a three minute walk from the rental.

Second visit to Benedictine suite

After a wonderful 1 week stay in summer 2007 we returned for a 2 week stay in 2008 and we were not disappointed. The suite is very comfortable and well-equipped. La Charite is a great place with some nice restaurants in walking distance. There were concerts and a special market whilst we there and there are lots of excellent places to visit in the area - Sancerre, Vezelay and Guedelon are all within an hour's drive and well worth a visit. The owners are great - very helpful and friendly but never intrusive.
Owner's Response: We enjoy greeting returning guests. It is a great compliment to us that we have a number of repeat guests. The vacation rental is very central. It is a short walk to wonderful bakeries, cafes and restaurants.

Another great stay in the Benedictine Suite

An excellent apartment! The description is entirely accurate and the facilities are well-maintained. Bed linen and towels, which are provided, are changed weekly. It is well equipped, clean and situated within easy reach of all the facilities of La Charite sur Loire, a delightful medieval town. One could exist here quite happily without a car as the station is about 10 minutes walk away (mainline to Paris) and there are many lovely walks in the immediate area - along the banks of the Loire, by the canal and up into the forest nearby. Kelly and Byron are excellent hosts - always there when needed but never intrusive. This was our second visit and we will certainly be returning, maybe with more of the family as the adjacent suites are ideal for families who want to be together but still retain some independence. Altogether an ideal place in which to relax but with enough going on to keep the active entertained.

Return Trip to La Charite

La Charite is an excellent base for exploring France Centre. The countryside is beautiful, the people are very friendly, and many sites of interest are within easy driving distance. On our second trip to La Charite, Kelly and Byron gave us many new suggestions for places to visit and we were able to explore areas that we had missed on our first 3 week stay. We recommend that you stay off the freeway and travel the national and department roads. Kelly and Byron are wonderful hosts. The location of the gite in the medieval centre of the town is ideal. The gite provides all the comforts of home and we highly recommend it. The restaurant at Noirlac is a must. Dine in the cafe or treat yourself to a gourmet meal in the Michelin Star restaurant. The cafe serves amazing deserts at very reasonable prices.

This was our first experience with staying in a gite - and we are ready to do it again and again. Byron and Kelly were very welcoming and gave us some great ideas. Everything was in working order and very clean. We loved being able to walk out the door and find a fresh croissant each morning. The Benedictine Suite was perfect for 2 couples traveling together.

It was wonderful

We stayed in the Benedictine Suite with my sister & her husband, over from Australia for the 1st time in 3 years, and we really had a reunion to remember.
The Gite is lovely and has a real authentic charm to it, as well as being comfortable and well equipped. Situated literally on the doorstep of the chuch it is very special. The location in La Charite is perfect, the town offers a wonderful base, with restaurants and local shops on the doorstep, as well as being a fantastic base for sightseeing in the region and visiting the wonderful vinyards of Sancerre and Pouilly.
Lastly our hosts, the owners of the Gite, were not only wonderfully helpful and friendly, but also made us feel totally welcome and at home immediately.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a holiday destination, and hope to make it back ourselves at some point in the future.
