La Cagnotte, a 19th century stone house in the medieval village of Hau

(Many more pictures on our website, ask for link) In the picturesque medieval village of Haut de Cagnes, this little house offers a lot of charms. It is simple, rustic and incredibly cosy. Uniquely for Haut de Cagnes the house has both its own front garden, rear garden with a palm tree and a roof terrace with a view down to the sea. The main bedroom has a grand view onto the Medieval Grimaldi castle. A 20 minute drive from Nice airport, it is a perfect get-away for an extended weekend or a week. From the house it is just a five minute walk up to the castle where there are some excellent restaurants and cafes. From spring to autumn you can eat outside in front of the castle and enjoy the beautiful view.

Perched on a hill in the 'hinterlands' of Nice, Le Haut-de-Cagnes is one of the most charming spots on the Riviera. Naomi Barry of the New York Times wrote that it 'crowns the top of a blue-cypressed hill like a village in an Italian Renaissance painting.' At the foot of the hill is an old fishing port and rapidly developing beach resort called Cros-de-Cagnes, between Nice and Antibes. Renoir stated that the village was 'the place where I want to paint until the last day of my life.'

Notes:

History Although the Roman legions had already noticed this special location on the Mediterranean coast in the 4th century BC, the history of Cagnes-sur-Mer truly began in the Middle Ages, which was to leave its mark on the Haut-de-Cagnes quarter. Surrounded by ramparts and gates, the mediaeval village today attracts many visitors from all parts. Corbelled houses, old stone, winding alleyways, 'pontis' bridges, flowered facades, but also gourmet restaurants and art galleries, are the principal advantages of this town, dominated by the baronial hall of Raynier de Grimaldi, ancestor of the royal family of Monaco. Famous characters In the years following the First World War, this village became the meeting place for artists from around the world, which earned it the nickname: 'the Montmartre of the Côte d’Azur'. It was a source of inspiration for many painters- Renoir, Soutine, Yves Klein, Foujita, Modigliani, Derain ... and became a permanent or temporary home to many other artists.

To get there

Fly to Nice airport, take a 15 minute taxi ride to the medieval hill-top village. Altenatively, rent a car and drive up there. Directions: When you get into Cagnes sur Mer, look for brown signs posted 'Haut de Cagnes' and 'Bourg Medieval'. When you get to the top of the road and you are in doubt because you can see that the road has hit a junction with three other roads, one of which leads downhill between the walls of two buildings that you can barely pass, you are there. The house is called 'La Cagnotte' which is on 2 Chemin des Caucours, Haut de Cagnes. It is just opposite the entrance to the Swedish Church. Ask for 'Eglise Suedoise' if you get lost up there. Look for the pastel blue railing and you are there. Parking is available in the little car park just down the hill from the house.

More on Haute de Cagnes

Haut-de-Cagnes, paved with pebble stones, offers the panoramic views of the surrounding scenery and offers the opportunity to admire monuments and sites such as: • The “Chapelle Notre Dame de Protection”, • frescoes dated around 1530. • The Church of Saint-Pierre • The “Maison des Artistes”, contemporary art exhibitions. • The “Espace Solidor” jewelry. • The medieval fortress (today a town museum) is perched on the hilltop • within the walls of historic Haut-de-Cagnes (old town). • Renoir’s home (today a museum). The Chateau in Haut-de-Cagnes, old town, was built in the 14th century and reworked in the 17th by Henri Grimaldi. Behind the fortress walls is a shady courtyard with a 200 year old pepper tree. The surrounding marble columns conceal a museum devoted to the olive tree, and a small collection of Modern Mediterranean art.

Dreamy

Daytripper, London, UK
Review Submitted: July 18, 2008, Date of stay: July, 2008

We stayed at dreamy La Cagnotte for a week in July 2008 and wished we could have stayed longer. It is such a special place with the most charming living areas inside and out. With a small baby in tow, we tended to stay in for the evenings and could not imagine a more perfect place to have enjoyed our simple, home cooked dinners under the grape vines followed by coffee on the roof top terrace. The views will take your breath away. There is no oven but we didn't miss it. Also, be aware there are lots of flies at the height of summer but insect repellant and fly spray will keep them at bay. There is a fairly steep stair case to the bedrooms and bathroom but there are steel anchors in the wall to grab on to as you climb - so it's fine.

Haut de Cagnes and Cagnes Sur Mer are also brilliant finds yet so close to the hub of Nice, Cannes and the rest of the gorgeous Riviera. We caught a taxi from Nice airport to the house and used the free shuttle bus up to the castle (walking distance) and down to Cagnes Sur Mer. From Cagnes Sur Mer we caught the bus to Nice and trains to Villefranche, Monaco, Antibes and Cannes. A car would be handy but we managed well without (even with our baby!).

Thanks to the owners for making their holiday home available.

Owner's response:

Thanks so much for your beautiful review.
Kind regards,
Christian
