Old Provençal farmhouse in beautiful setting with large pool

The farmhouse dates from the 19th century but has been renovated and extended to include a spacious living room, in keeping with the original features. There is a fully-equipped kitchen with breakfast area and a dining room with original beams and a traditional oak refectory table. The living room has large French windows opening onto the front garden and BBQ area. There is an old mulberry tree at the front providing plenty of shade. The large pool is to the rear of the property and is bordered on two sides by terraces and pine forest and has views out over wooded hillsides. In total there is 7500 m2 of land. The house is situated at the end of a gated lane in the small and friendly hamlet of St Jaume, about 3km from the picturesque village of Lorgues.

The house is one of the oldest in the hamlet of St Jaume, with a population of a few hundred people. It is a 3km drive from the village of Lorgues (population 8000) with its shops, restaurants and two supermarkets, and about 1 hour from Nice and Aix. Lorgues has a typical provençal market each Tuesday. There are many attractive villages in the area - particularly recommended are Tourtour, Cotignac, Villecroze and Entrecastaux. Local ‘domaines’ offer wine-tasting and buying. There is local provision for horse-riding, canoeing/ kayaking, walking, golf, tennis and other pursuits. Lorgues has an extensive cultural programme in the summer with many concerts and ‘spectacles’.

Notes to the rental rates

  • Please note that rental periods are normally Saturday-to-Saturday (arrival 4 p.m. onwards - departure before 10 a.m. to allow for cleaning).
  • Our payment terms are 30% on confirmation of booking (non-refundable) and the balance of 70% four weeks prior to commencement of letting.
    We also ask for a security deposit of £100 per week which is normally refundable within 2 weeks of departure.
  • Electricity and linen are included. Hob is part electric and part gas - bottled gas for the burners may be purchased at the supermarket - but there will normally be some in the bottle on arrival.

  • Bedroom 1 is a single with storage space and with views out to the front of the property. Bedroom 2 and Bedroom 3 are both doubles and have an adjoining door. Both face out towards the front. Bedroom 3 has a balcony and an open staircase (not suitable for very small children) leading up to a gallery with a third bed. Bedroom 4 faces out towards the back of the property with views over the pool, hillside and woodland. It is adjacent to one of the bathrooms.

Notes:

The lounge has a television with French channels. The washing machine and iron are located in the laundry room to the back of the property, and there is space for drying on the outside line. The kitchen has a modern dishwasher. There is a sun terrace at the back close to the pool with parasols, a table, chairs and four sun loungers. Outside at the front there is picnic table shaded by a mulberry tree.

Garden and pool

The front garden is surrounded by a high hedge of evergreens and is very private. There is a large mulberry tree in the middle of the garden, providing shade, and a large stone trough or bassin with its own water supply (but this is not kept full). The BBQ area is also at the front, beneath a pergola, with some separate seating available. To the side of the house there is a good-sized field with evergreens on two sides suitable for football or similar activity. To the rear is the pool with spacious patio surround. The pool measures 12m by 5.5m, and has a depth of 2m at its deepest point. To meet French legal requirements, it is also equipped with an alarm. Beyond the pool there are terraces or restanques bordered by a small forest with a path leading down to the valley of St Jaume with a private road.

Information about communications and safety

Communications: There is no phone in the house but there is good mobile reception. Lorgues has its own post office with all the usual facilities. There are internet cafés in Draguignan some 30 mins by car from Lorgues. Safety: There are two wells within the property grounds fitted with a grill and/or door, but young children should be advised not to play close to them. The staircase has a rope handrail and is unsuitable for elderly people. There are several doorways that would be considered low by modern standards. As noted above, the pool is fitted with an alarm that can be switched on and off.
