Architect's idyllic holiday house, rural with footpath to sandy cove

Architect -designed renovated period house surrounded by terraces overlooking small bay. The old Chemin de Fer de Provence at the end of the garden is now a traffic-free path 400m to sandy beach. The walled garden has a play area to one side with swing, tree house, and table tennis; the other side has a pool, barbecue, and summer kitchen. Planting includes olive, eucalyptus, mimosa, cork oak, lemon, orange trees with honeysuckle, jasmine, rose and wisteria. Kitchen designed for informal holiday meals. The light-drenched living and dining room has Saarinen tulip chairs and Jasper Morrison sofas Perfect place for stylish relaxed family holidays.

Nearest airport: Toulon/Hyeres at 15 miles
Nearest beach: Beach at 400 metres

At the end of our garden is the old Chemin de Fer de Provence, closed to traffic and safe for walking or cycling. It leads to the Canadel cove beach (400m) and then on to Rayol which has several food shops, 2 or 3 small restaurants, newspapers, Post Office, doctors, Office de Tourisme, bus station. Large outdoor market on Friday morning. On a headland owned by French National Trust is the Jardin Botanique. Guides explain the Mediterranean flora. Outdoor classical music concerts in the summer. Should the domestic scene prove too much, stroll down to the Relais des Maures which has a big terrace, food, drinks and a chance to meet other people. From June to Sep, the Club Tropicana bordering the beach serves lunch, dinner and has live music.

Local activities swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking

Notes:

From mid-May to end of September, Canadel Beach has a lifeguard, pedaloes, windsurfers for hire and 2 restaurants. One has dancing and live music at weekends. Rayol has summer concerts in the Jardin Botanique which is run by the equivalent of the National Trust. The National French sailing school at Cavalière is excellent for lessons/boat hire. The ridge of the Maures above the house is a cycling walking path with panoramic views. Range of first class restaurants and vineyards nearby. Day trips can be taken to the Iles d'Or, protected from all traffic and commerce. These protected islands are said to be the essence of the Mediterranean: exuberant scented Provencal flora, silver beaches, translucent seas, hot sun. No cars allowed but bikes can be taken on the ferry or hired in Porquerolles, the largest island. Here you can picnic, swim and hike in a magical landscape. The middle island, Port Cros, is a marine, butterfly and insect reserve without cars.
