Chateaudouble, a real eagle's nest teetering on the top of a cliff (130 metres high). This name which actually means 'double castle' comes from the fact that there are two castles here. One is at the top of the village, the other on the banks of the river Nartuby. Chateaudouble is a gem of Provence encased in greenery. To nature lovers it offers magnificent walks:- The canyons of Chateaudouble, The prehistoric caves, The Hamlet of Rebouillon, a green island bordered by the Nartuby on one side and the canal of the Reine Jeanne on the other. The village itself has a couple of restaurants, shop, historic chapel and shady terrace cafe with magnificent views over the gorge. Drive a little further and visit the Gorges de Verdon and the Lac Ste Croix, or in less than an hour you can be in the chic resort of St Tropez. The area is surrounded by medieval villages for you to explore and also visit the local markets in the region.

A place in Provence

A wonderful house in a simply magical location.

The views are to die for, and the local village of Chateaudouble is quite unspoiled and is not over run with tourists.

The owners are very helpful and friendly and get things fixed that need fixing.

There is quite a lot of driving to do to get anywhere, but the roads are quiet and it is not a chore.

Highly recommended.

Bliss!

We have stayed three times in La MaisonLavande. Each stay was as enjoyable as the first. We really love the house - it's location is breathtaking - the interior is furnished in a very comfortable yet sophisticated style. Always very clean on arrival - well stocked with crockery, cutlery etc. Brillian 'library'. Chateaudouble is a pretty village within walking distance. Restaurants are extremely good. Excellent location for Verdun Gorge and Riviera cost. Sitting on the terrace, having breakfast on a sunny morning, overlooking the Chateaudouble Gorge ... bliss!!

If you want Provence-this is it!!

Review Submitted: December 15, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2007
We have visited La Maison Lavande several times now, even celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary there. It is a holiday venue with many options, whether it be a lazy day with a bottle(or two) of wine and a barbeque overlooking the gorge,or a more strenuous day out driving round the gorges of Verdon. It was the perfect'get away from it all' villa.

We found it to be clean, very well presented and fully equipped, making it a home from home.We liked the little extra touches and the very extensive book collection!

On several occasions we walked down to the pretty village for croissants and the restaurants and found the locals very friendly.

The views of Chateaudouble gorge will never be forgotten and we hope to return again soon.

Disappointed

Twinkle Toes Cambridge
Review Submitted: October 9, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
We found this property very disappointing, it looked good at first glance but there were many problems. After much correspondence with the owners they sent us a refund cheque of just over 15% as compensation. In no way did this make up for all the problems which spoilt our holiday from the moment we arrived, however, we did not have the time or the energy to try to get more, they had excuses for all our complaints.
To expand a little on the problems:- We could not use the garden because it was totally overgrown, we had to cut a hedge with scissors to see down the gorge. The drive was so overgrown that our cars were scratched every time we drove in. Weather was blamed for this but surely the owners should have employed a gardener to fix it? One toilet had urine in it when we arrived and did not work, it was four days before it was fixed. The seat on the other toilet was broken, it was also four days before this was replaced. One shower was blocked and we had to remove a great deal of hair from the plughole before water would drain away. There was black mould in the other shower. The property had not been cleaned properly and there was still rubbish in the kitchen bin. The outside table was so dirty we had to scrub it before we could use it. There is more but I think this is enough to explain why we were thoroughly disappointed.
Owner's Response: We were very saddened to hear about this complaint especially since it is our first one in the 4 years we have been renting our beautiful villa in Provence. We have otherwise only received positive feedback and thank yous, including from the previous guests to the complainant who, apparently, have recommended it to their friends. We also have repeat guests who stay.

On the day these guests arrived unfortunately the husband of the couple who manage the property had a heart attack and had to be taken to a major hospital 2 hours away. They sent their friends who were not familiar with the property to do the changeover to help out. They made a mistake of forgetting to clean the downstairs toilet and empty the bin and as soon as the managers’ son was available to come out he was able to fix the seat of the downstairs toilet.

After speaking with the guests at the time and explaining the situation and apologising they were absolutely fine with this and sympathised with the situation. We never the less made arrangements to compensate them for the inconvenience.

We personally cut all the plants and hedges 4 weeks previously and are really surprised they had grown to such an extent. This country rural villa garden has lots of plants and shrubbery and the view of the gorge is so magnificent it would take a very large hedge to obscure such a view.

We can only apologise again that such unfortunate circumstances arose. Thankfully the manager is making a good recovery and therefore the same situation should not arise again.
