Discover the Many Faces of Cassis:
We first stayed in Cassis in July, 2002 during the height of the tourist season. It was very lively and animated, but still felt like a 'real' place. Since, we've been back in every season, including the middle of January. Because Cassis is located in a natural bowl facing the sea, it is sheltered and thus is very pleasant all year round. Swimming is possible in December and January. Cassidains are welcoming by nature and the town does not have the 'tourist cocoon' feel that many towns in Provence have. There is a healthy balance between tourist-oriented activities and the ongoing life of the residents. The town is alive all year round; especially don't miss the market days--Wednesday and Saturday.
Aside from the obvious activities centered around water (fishing, sailing, swimming, diving), the area is rich in archaeological interest. We especially recommend Glanum, in St. Remy, Isle sur La Sorgue, Les Baux de Provence, and the Roman sites in Marseille, Arles and Avignon.
Our neighbor, Le Clos des Aromes:
Our first stays in Cassis were at the small, charming hotel, Le Clos des Aromes, next to the church at 10, rue Abbe Paul Mouton. We always return for a meal on the sunny terrace in summer, or near the cosy fireplace in winter when the mistral is blowing. The food is delicious and the atmosphere very special. It's hard not to fall in love with Julien and Renaud, the welcoming hosts of Le Clos. If our apartment isn't available, we suggest you contact them at 04.42.01.71.84. And say that 'Stephanie sent you.' Several of our other Cassis favorites follow: Le Grend Bleu, 12, Quai des Baux. Tel 04.42.01.23.23. There's nothing more seductive than a lazy afternoon, blue sky and sun, a carafe of Cassis rose, and a delicious Provencal salad on their terrace facing the port. La Maison des Vins, Route de Marseille (D559). Tel 04.42.01.15.61. For rental of your own Zodiac to explore the Calanques, we recommend J.C.F. Boat Services, 50 Ave des Calanques (Port Miou). Tel 06.75.74.25.81.
A Little Farther Afield:
If you are adventuring out with a car, here are places we have loved.
Wine is a must in Provence and in Cassis, you are in the heart of the vines. We highly recommend the Domaine de Terrebrune in nearby Ollioules (route to Toulon) for their wonderful reds and roses, and lunch or dinner in the Vigneron restaurant. Look at their site, ask for details, or call for reservations at 04.94.88.36.19. On the way toward Isle sur La Sorgue, don't miss Domaine Fredavelle, Route de Pelissanne, Equilles (on the D17 between Pelissanne Salon and Saint-Cannat. Tel 04.42.92.38.29.
Don't ignore Marseille. It's a bit challenging (and be attentive to your belongings), but the city has much historical and culinary interest. To get you started, we recommend a small museum, the Roman Docks Museum located 3 minutes from the port (well-signed and easy to find) at Place Vivaux. Especially if you are interested in ship wrecks and wine, you will be surprised and fascinated by its collection.
