This region was colonised by the Greeks and the Romans, who probably introduced the grape. La Ciotat lies between the vineyards of Cassis and Bandol, and many domains are within easy reach. The highest point in the region is the Ste. Baume, over 1000 metres in height. From the apartment the Route des Cretes rises to 400 metres, to the highest cliffs in Europe. Aix-en-Provence is famous for its festival, and for Cezanne. The Roman cities of Arles and Nimes, with their splendid arenas, and the Pont du Gard, are half a day's drive away. The well known town of St Remy and the famous hill fortress of Les Baux will give pleasure to all visitors. Nearer to La Ciotat are the beautiful towns of the Var, namely La Cadiere d'Azur and Le Castellet. A final mention of a great piece of architecture: the Abbaye du Thoronet, a splendid and living convent leading us into the Cistercian way of life, giving us the periods of Roman and Gothic. In addition to all this there is the magic of St Tropez.
