Mas des Tourterelles is a 19th century Provençal farmhouse within a walled garden situated in a quiet residential area. The converted barn comprises a first floor apartment with double bedroom + bathroom. The sitting room has a dining area and there is a well equipped kitchen. Private terrace. Two further bedrooms below, (one double and one twin-bedded) provides further accommodation. Simplicity is the fundamental theme of the decor at Mas des Tourterelles where colours and furnishings complement the climate. Outside, the garden and our superb 10 x 5m pool may be enjoyed, whether you want to relax in the shade or lie by the pool. A 5 minute walk takes you into the centre of the fashionable and interesting town of St Rémy-de-Provence.

The first floor apartment is reached by an outside staircase, has a private terrace and enjoys magnificent views of Les Alpilles. A light and spacious south facing sitting room has a dining area and there is a well equipped kitchen. There is a double bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower. The other two bedrooms are directly below with their own entrances and sitting out areas under a vine covered tonnelle with table and chairs.

St Rémy-de-Provence is the gateway to the Alpilles and an ideal base from which to explore the area whatever your interests. It evokes the very essence of Provence with boulevards shaded by plane trees, fountains splashing in the many hidden squares inside the old town and the weekly market which spreads down the little streets. Watch the world go by from a pavement café or enjoy Provençal cuisine at one of the many restaurants to be found in St Rémy. The Roman Antiquities at Glanum lie just to the south of the town, whilst Arles is 25 k and Nimes 40k. The Pont du Gard, the 2000 year old aqueduct which was built to supply Nimes with spring water is 35k. The Camargue and its vast nature reserve abounds in wildlife, including white horses, black cattle, flamingos and egrets.

Les Alpilles offers a variety of wonderful routes using the Grand Randonnée for walkers in spring and autumn. The French passion for cycling is apparent, especially at weekends, when it seems all Frenchmen take to the roads and mountain tracks in this wonderful cycling country. Details of local festivals, markets and ferias involving Carmarguais bulls and horses can be obtained from us or from the tourist office in the town. If art is your interest you can uncover the fascinating links between Van Gogh and St Rémy where he spent his last years at the former monastery of St-Paul-de-Mausole. There are painting festivals in the town during the summer months and, for the connoisseur, world renowned festivals of the arts at nearby Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Orange.

A Week in Provence at Mas des Tourterelles

My husband and I spent a week at this apartment in November. It was all that the ad said it would be and more.

The property was beautiful and very well maintained. The kitchen was extraordinary as Carrie and Richard had everything that you could ask for to make wonderful meals. They even offered to buy me some groceries when they went to the supermarket, if there was anything that we needed. But, we would go out in the morning and get our breakfast for the next day and dinner that evening. St. Remy is full of wonderful small shops that sell meat, cheese, pastries, bread, groceries, wine and the freshest vegetables and fruit that I have ever seen. It was very centrally located and a short walk to the market and area where all the restaurants, flea market and food shops are located. We never needed a car and walked everywhere that week and saw all of the lovely place.

The bed was wonderful and had a beautiful comforter on it with a small closet area to put our clothes away...not too big, yet not too small.

The best part about the apartment for us was the TV. They had satellite TV and we got a lot of English (British)speaking stations for after dinner when we were tired from
walking and seeing the sights in the St Remy area.

There was a wash machine that proved to be convenient. The only thing missing was a dryer, but Carrie explained to me that the weather of Provence dried your clothes on the line very fast. Apparently they don't have dryers there. There was plenty of room to hang your clothes.

The owners couldn't have been nicer and I know we have made two new friends. I would definitely rent this property again if we were going to be in the area. Although, it was too cold to swim in the pool; the pool area was very picturesque with plants everywhere. We were so glad that we made such a good choice.

Apartment is spacious, light and airy. Clean and well maintained. Welcoming owners.

Five minutes walk from the town centre - but in a very quiet area.

Need to be aware that there will be a succession of other guests in the B&B accommodation.

We would definitely recommend to friends and others.
