Local area:
The village of La Breole is rural and unspoilt and is only about half a km from the house. It has two small stores, two bars, a boulangerie, post office and delightful new open air supervised swimming pool. A short walk from the village is lake Serre Poncon, one of the largest in France, with boat mooring facilities and swimming access. Boats and yachts can be hired on the lake and white-water rafting takes place on both large rivers flowing into it. There are numerous marked walks close to the house. Small towns close by stage daily open air markets where local produce is sold. La Breole is famous for its firework display during the August fete. Mountain bikes can be hired locally. A new adventure course and go-cart track is only 6km away.
A little further from the house, other adventure courses of all grades of difficulty have been opened in the last two years and these have proved very popular with our guests.
Mountains and sight-seeing:
The start of more extensive walks to high alpine pastures can be reached within 15 mins. We can offer to our guests advice and maps of venues to enable them to see alpine flora and fauna including chamois, marmot and maybe eagles. Spectacular scenic view points and historic buildings and fortifications, by Vauban, abound and provide lasting memories of this special area relatively unknown to many UK residents. There are numerous small concerts held in local monasteries and churches through the summer. Below the dam that harnesses the lake is the 'route des fruites et des vins' extending south practically to the Med. Local vineyards allow wine tasting and sell their wine bottled or 'en vrac'. A new horse riding stable at 2km from the house has been very popular with our 2006 guests.
Further afield.:
Less than two hours drive and you can reach the Mediterranean coast, visit Marseille or the remarkable Callanque coastline, or branch to see the spectacular Verdon gorges.
In August there is the famous lavender festival at Digne (1 hr). Aix en Provence, the ancient capital of Provence is less than 60 mins drive.
