The Roman city of Aix-en-Provence is one of the most graceful cities in France. It was founded in 123 BC on the site of thermal springs (Aquae Sextiae), which are still flowing today. In the 12th century the Counts of Provence made Aix their capital, since when the city has thrived as a centre of art and learning. Most of the character of the city has been retained, with elegant Italian baroque mansions, majestic squares, shaded avenues and mossy fountains. There is much history to explore, from the Roman baths to the studios of the most celebrated Aixois artist, Paul Cezanne. The city is a cultural centre with internationally renowned music, art and film festivals, and it is also a lively student centre with bustling cafes, fruit, vegetable and flower markets, and wonderful restaurants. Aix is 40 mins from Marseilles and Nimes airport, and the Mediterranean coast. It is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside, including the Luberon (A Year in Provence).
