Local Leisure Facilities:
Local leisure pursuits include skiing in winter, golf in summer, there is a local course – 9 holes in Montgenvre and 9 holes on the Italian side of the border in Claviere, horse-riding, excellent mountain biking trails, cycling and walking (The Grande Route 5 passes through the village) and the local outdoor heated swimming pool is open in the summer.
The Area:
Montgenevre is a traditional French alpine village with local restaurants, cafes and shops and a 20 minute walk away, also connected by local buses, is the beautiful Italian alpine village of Claviere were you can taste traditional Italian cuisine.
It also boasts one of Europe’s most important larch forests and has an unusual geological formation, a fossil submarine volcano, le Massif du Chenaillet, formed when molten lava erupted into cold water to form rocks in the form of tubes and cushions.
A short drive away,15 mins, is Briancon, in the Serre Chevalier ski region, a reasonably large town with local supermarkets.
Excellent shopping can be enjoyed in nearby Turin; a stylish city with cathedrals, historic buildings, opera and theatre as well as cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
Ski:
Within 100 metres of the house are the ski lifts of Montgenevre and on offer is a good variety of ski runs, mostly suited to intermediates and beginners and for snowboarders there is a snow park with quarter-pipe, pro-jump and gap. Once a week there is night skiing, and heliskiing is available. Additionally there is a connection to the Italian Milky Way ski area, in the Valli di Susa which includes Sestriere, around which the 2006 Turin winter Olympic will be held, and a short drive away is the French resorts of Sierre Chevalier and through the Frejus tunnel access to the 3 valleys ski area.
Golf:
In the Summer the local course is open and the tee off is within a 100 metres of the house. There are 9 holes in Montgenvre and additional adjoining 9 holes on the Italian side of the border in Claviere, these can be played separately or together.
Sestriere is a 15 min drive away and has a magnificent 18 hole course.
