Complete Relaxation in the Dordogne

We have stayed at Caminade on three occasions - we wouldn't go back if it wasn't what we like; laid back, conveniently located, and in a part of the Dordogne that we love.
The gite itself is attached to Dave & Lynne's converted barn/farm, and you're part of the same building, so it's good to have your hosts nearby. Dave & Lynne leave it to you as to how much you interact. We enjoy their company (with their dog Poppy, and whomsoever of their family is out visiting them at the time), and enjoy a regular pleasant sundowner with them, plus the occasional meal out and a pint over at the Petit Gurson (British owned bar over at St Martin de Gurson).
The gite offers plenty of space, is always presented well- cleaned, and includes everything you need for a self-contained break. It is not a top-end luxury (expensive) gite, but covers everything in a sound workmanlike manner. It retains many of the original features, with oak beams and stone walls. The setting is lovely with views to St Remy sur Lidoire atop the far side of the river Lidoire valley.
The area is unlike the better known Dordogne to the East, which has chateaux perched on steep cliffs aside the river, is very touristy, crowded and expensive. Caminade is in the working Dordogne, with vineyards, orchards, and agriculture as the main industry, set in the much gentler rolling part of the Dordogne valley. It's less crowded, less expensive, and more relaxed in our opinion. St Meard de Gurcon is the closest village, with kind friendly people, and all basic needs, including restaurants and shops.
Sainte Foye market on a Saturday morning is an absolute must, set around the bastide square right beside the river. There is a choice of hypermarkets, and many restaurants.
Our favourite restaurants are the Torchon Brule in St Meard, Relais de Conterie to the south, Hotel du Commerce at Villefranche (variable), and a right knees up at the Jolibois on Sunday lunchtimes. Service at Le Pressoir in St Meard can be dour and is expensive.
There's lots to do, with all sorts of outdoor activities in the region. We feel completely at home staying at Caminade, and thoroughly enjoy the region - it's a wonderful break!
Owner's Response: Mike & Rita have stayed at Caminade on three occasions and each time we have enjoyed there stay. They certainly love the area and all that we have to offer.
Thanks Mike for your review and look forward to seeing you both next year. 2009.
