REVIEW OF LES RIVIERES GITES (Martrieux)
Review Submitted: July 1, 2010
Date of Stay: June 2010
For our French holiday this year, we booked a gite near Riberac. However, on arrival, we found it in course of restoration and not ready for occupation. The owner declined to give us a refund and suggested that we stayed at Les Rivieres, owned and managed by Richard and Nicky. We agreed, providing that he covered all the costs. Later, we found out that Nicky and Richard knew him, and knew that they were unlikely to be paid. Despite this, and to save our holiday, they readily accepted the 4 of us. But for their generosity, we would have lost our holiday or had to find another gite, and pay for the holiday twice.
Even so, the holiday would have been disappointing had their gite not been up to standard. In fact, Les Rivieres is a lovely place to stay and I endorse the strong recommendations of other reviewers, for all the reasons they have given. The site is large, safe, attractively laid out, and ideal for young families. Nonetheless, our adult group enjoyed every aspect of our stay. The pool was never overcrowded, the estate easily absorbs all the guests, and we had all the privacy we needed. We stayed in Martrieux, a restored farmhouse, which is exactly as shown at http://lesrivieres.co.uk/martrieux.html The house or the private garden are in the sun for most of the day, so we enjoyed breakfast on the small terrace, and drinks in the garden in the evening. Our trips out included the nearby Villebois la Valette, with its ancient covered market, excellent restaurant; and Super-U which meets most shopping needs; Brantome, which is worth a full days visit; Riberac on market day (good value high quality lunch in the pretty Les Citronellas restaurant); and St Jean de Cole.
Nicky and Richard are exceptionally welcoming, relaxed, conscientious hosts who will do everything possible to provide you with an enjoyable stay. They never intrude, but are always there to help with any aspect of your holiday.
Go there - you are unlikely to be disappointed!
