The Locality:
Villars is a short walk from St. Martial Viveyrol, with its impressive Romanesque fortified church. There is a bar which serves good value workers lunches. 3 km. away is Verteillac, where you can find all of life’s essentials, many of them under one roof in the « magasin universel » ! You can wander the country lanes without seeing another tourist, or enjoy the hustle of Ribérac’s Friday market with many local specialities.
The Region:
The local river is the Dronne, which runs through the mediaeval village of Aubeterre to the west, on through Ribérac and onto historic Brantome, “La Venise du Périgord”. The countryside, a blend of rolling fields and limestone cliffs, is dotted with châteaux, thousand year old churches and prehistoric caves. The tourist attractions of Les Eyzies and Sarlat are a day trip away, as are the wine growing regions of Bordeaux and Cognac.
Local Treats:
The Périgord is famed for its cuisine, with specialities such as confit de canard, foie gras, walnuts, roast quails, cepes, truffles…These can be bought fresh in season, or sampled in one of the many restaurants, of which there are ample to suit all budgets and occasions. To balance this gourmandise, the area is excellent for walking, cycling, rock climbing, swimming, or just lazing by the pool enjoying the peace and quiet.
