The Long House is part of the tiny rural hamlet of La Guibaudie. It is a large detached stone house that was once two cottages dating from the 17th century. The house is at the end of a country lane in the heart of the rolling countryside of the Périgord Blanc, it is away from roads - thus making it very safe for children - but is not isolated. The pretty riverside village of Bourdeilles, with its medieval Château, small shops and restaurants is 4 kms away. Brantôme, the Venice of the Périgord, with larger shops, famous restaurants, the oldest clock tower in France and a weekly market is 10kms away. Périgueux, the capital of the Dordogne, with its renaissance centre, elegant shops and a wide variety of restaurants is 20kms away.

It also has a hi-fi, video, DVD player, satellite TV (BBC channels plus others) - and there are masses of books, videos, DVDs, CDs, games (including ping-pong, darts, badminton and mini-billiards) and a selection of childrens bicycles. Outside there is a south-facing patio - with barbeque, and also a covered veranda to provide shade on very hot days. The Long House has its own private swimming pool (8x4m), which is a secluded oasis with grass and landscaped shrubberies around it. The garden area is large (3000 sq.m.), mainly grass, so there is plenty of room for children to play.

Food and Drink

The Périgord is famous for its cuisine and there are many good restaurants around La Guibaudie ranging in price from the top of the range Michelin-starred Moulin de l'Abbaye in Brantôme to simple relais routiers which offer a limited range of meals at a very low cost. The restaurant at the nearby Château de la Côte is excellent and a meal on the terrace there on a warm summer's night is memorable. Nearby in Champagnac de Belair is the fabulous Michelin-starred Moulin du Roc, our favourite restaurant and a real gourmet treat. Bourdeilles offers a choice between the smart riverside terrace of the Hotel les Griffons, the excellent Le Donjon and the livelier ambiance of the Bar les Tilleuls in the square, which offers simpler fare. Brantôme has lots of restaurants apart from the Moulin ranging from the splendidly old-fashioned Frères Charbonnel with its riverside terrace to the charming Le Vieux Four pizzeria built into the limestone cliffs.

Things to Do in the Area

It is wonderful walking country and there are many lovely walks that can be taken from the house. One of these is along the Grande Randonnée 36, part of the network of walking trails that criss-cross France, which passes La Guibaudie. This will take you into Bourdeilles through some beautiful countryside with sweeping views across the wooded landscape. Being in a completely rural location, there is a wealth of bird life to be seen, including hoopoes, hen harriers, kestrels, hobbies, owls and, in May, nightingales that sing their hearts out in the thickets by the stream in the valley. In late February and late October you can watch the migration of the cranes. Wild flowers grow in abundance - from which La Guibaudie got its name - including orchids and cowslips in the spring. Occasionally deer can be seen grazing on the edges of woods on the sides of the valley beside the Château or wild boar in the nearby forests.
