Beautiful, peaceful house in gorgeous countryside

Review Submitted: March 9, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2008
We had a wonderful holiday at this lovely, rustic cottage in a secluded and very quiet setting. The house itself is charming and the sparkling pool is absolutely fabulous with views over the surrounding countryside – the pool was beautifully clean and well maintained throughout our stay. Sitting outside in the sunshine eating barbecues and crusty French bread was delightful either by the pool or under the verandah. There is loads to do in the area with lots of variety – colourful French markets, a real middle earth experience in caves at Padirac, beautiful little towns with lots of medieval features (we loved Belves) and the highspot for us was canoeing 15km downriver from Vitrac. Eating out was not cheap because of the pound/euro but we had a fantastic 5 course meal at La Recreation in Les Arques with stuffed courgette flowers (at least that’s what we think they were!!). The minor criticism of the house was the lack of a really good shower – the water pressure was excellent, but the hand held attachment wasn’t quite the same! We felt the bathroom was in need of updating (which apparently it has been since we stayed). Otherwise the house was great – – our teenagers loved lounging in the hammock with their books or sunbathing by the pool and our ten year old could not be kept out of the water. Mike, the owner, was very helpful and prompt to deal with enquiries as well as giving us lots of info about the surrounding area. The wine, local bread, fruit juice, eggs, jam etc. was a welcome bonus on our arrival. We would definitely highly recommend this house and area to families!

Owner's Response: Since the visit which was the subject of the review the bathroom has been completely revamp and now has a combined bath/shower unit. A new second shower room /toilet has been added on the first floor.

Holiday 2011

Review Submitted: August 25, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We found the property clean with good facilities. The swimming pool is great and internet access is very useful. The accommodation worked well with 2 families. The location is quiet and peaceful with beautiful views. It is quite remote though and own transport is a must. There are lots of places to visit, we didn't manage to get to all of them. The owner has been very helpful and prompt returning our deposit. We realy enjoyed our week even though the weather was not brilliant.

Owner's Response: Adrian is quite right about the need for transport, there are lots of things to do in the area for which a car is a must.

Nice house but needs better upkeep

Review Submitted: August 23, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We've stayed in farmhouses in rural france before so know what to expect. this is a nice, old farmhouse in a beautiful location. It could be wonderful but there were many issues, too many to list them all here - I'll cover the worst ones. When we arrived, neither of the toilets was working, the place wasn't clean (although it had obviously been vacuumed/wiped clean in parts), the washer and dryer were too dirty for my wife to even contemplate touching, with filthy socks in them and dirt and cobwebs all over the outside, the fridge was dirty with dried ketchup on the interior walls and dirty shelves, the staircase lights weren't working at all - a fairly serious issue given they are wooden, open and winding, the cooker was filthy, the water filter jug was filthy with insects and other items floating in it, the microwave was unusable, the bathroom had unfinished tiling in it with a (small) hole in the wall. Subsequently the pool filter stopped working and I had to clean the filter bag out every couple of days and we found that the dryer (the washer had been replaced) wasn't just dirty, it didn't work. Mike, the owner, did try to deal with the various issues raised as quickly as possible but our primary issue was that the place wasn't clean and simply didn't seem to be being maintained properly. We had a good holiday and, as said, the house could be great and is in a really nice location but there were so many issues with it that shouldn't have arisen it took the shine off. We definitely won't be returning.
Owner's Response: During this renters stay plumbing problems arose which were immediately dealt with and a new washing machine was installed when the old one became unserviceable. I have in place a team of people who maintain the house and pool all of whom had contact with the above renter and all of whom had varying degrees of difficulties in their dealings with him. Because of the extent and nature of the complaints I thought it best to get involved myself and had first hand experience of the difficulties with which they had to deal. While the description of the condition of the house is completely over the top with gross inaccuracies with regard to specific issues, there were I accept minor short comings in the cleaning of the house prior to arrival, a once off issue which will not re-occur. I am happy that as in previous years all of the other renters (including some year on year returnees) had an enjoyable holiday.

Tranquil holiday in a beautiful rustic house

Review Submitted: July 18, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
La Gordonnie is set in an idyllic rural location, totally off the beaten track which is wonderfully peaceful within a tiny hamlet. It is located in lovely woodland with farms and meadows with great opportunities for walks. We have visited four or five times now and as we get to know the area better, love it more and more. The house is some 200 years old and retains its rustic character and this means it stays wonderfully cool in the heat. It is very comfortable, cosy (with a wood burning fire if the evenings get chilly) and easily accommodates six people and for those who want it, there is a TV and DVD player. The swimming pool which has been added more recently is a great asset in the heat of late spring and summer. It overlooks gorgeous countryside and benefits from an overlooking patio which is shaded by trees. There is also a BBQ and table & chairs under yet more trees which is equally pleasant.
The nearby village of St Pompon has a butcher, baker (get there early – its home made croissant and pain au raison are well worth the early rise) and other small local shops, including a tabac, small supermarket, chemist and restaurant; the local people are very friendly and really appreciate it if you try and speak French. Further afield, the towns of Daglan, Domme, Montpazier and Belves are all very well worth a visit (think medieval walled Cotswolds towns without the crowds and you will get the picture). The nearest big supermarkets are in Gourdon, which are 30 minutes away but have excellent local produce and choice. The local food and wine is fantastic and it is actually difficult to eat badly! The local Bergerac red and rose are great value for money. We particularly recommend eating in any of the local fermes auberge (farm restaurants) which offer seasonal local delicacies including ceps, foix gras, duck, geziers and so much more! In short, we love and hope to return, and we cannot recommend La Gordonnie highly enough, and the owner is very accommodating and responsive to requests and suggestions.
