Not far from Les Eyzies and Sarlat, where the Dordogne River makes a dramatic loop, “Les Volets Bleus” is a very private, beautifully-restored 300 year old Perigordian stone farmhouse that sits on 2 acres of lawned garden, in the heart of the Perigord Noir, with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Within 3 minutes of the charming village of Tremolat, our spacious home is elegantly furnished with French country antiques, and situated among fig, peach and walnut trees, with three outstanding veranda’s – two that overlook the large, magnificent pool that receives day-long sunshine. Luxuriously furnished, with all modern conveniences, 'Les Volets Bleus' sleeps 12, with 4 double/queen bedrooms and 2 single/twin bedrooms, all with crisp white linens and sumptuous beds, and is ideal for one large group, or for two or more smaller groups, since the Farmhouse and the converted Barn each have their own fully-equipped kitchens, and dining/living areas.

With a total of six bedrooms (3 double/queen bedrooms, 1 single room - 2 beds) in the Farmhouse and two bedrooms in the adjoining Converted Barn (1 queen/double, 1 single room - 2 beds), this ancient Perigordian farmhouse offers a total countryside getaway in the heart of the Dordogne. Set amid a garden filled with trees and roses, 'Les Volets Bleus' offers a unique retreat from the business of day-to-day life, while still offering the comfort of modern conveniences, all set in an atmosphere of charm and stylish elegance. The property was recently renovated to an exceptionally high standard with all new furniture, beds, linens and appliances, and filled with antiques from the area. All this was done with a careful eye to modern comforts, while staying true to the charm of the area. Outdoors, there are plenty of sunbeds, tables and chairs and umbrellas, as well as 2 BBQ.

The second bathroom downstairs is an ensuite that leads off the Downstairs Double Bedroom and contains a full American-style shower, as well as toilet and wash basin. The upstairs bathroom has a toilet, sink and mirror and is well-positioned for the upstairs bedrooms. The Converted Barn bathroom has a bath and shower with a window looking out over the countryside.

  • The downstairs master bedroom has a beautiful four-poster bed which faces out the windows for glorious views of the garden and surrounding area. The downstairs double bedroom is beautifully furnished with a large, comfortable double-bed and other antiques. This room offers the unique feature of a door to a beautiful private veranda overlooking the large, sparkling pool. Upstairs is a double bedroom with huge proportions and beautiful views over the countryside. The classic dormer windows open to the countryside, and the seat at the window is a perfect spot for some quiet time on a lazy afternoon. Opposite the landing the upstairs twin bedroom is done in a country French style, complete with an antique washstand. The master bedroom in the Barn, is very private and has luxurious linens and a sumptuous bed, while the pretty downstairs twin bedroom is large with light pouring in.

Notes: Note that the Farmhouse and Converted Barn BOTH offer their own kitchens and living areas with dishwashers, microwaves, coffee-makers, hair dryers, TV sets with multi-region Dvds and CD players. 'Les Volets Bleus' is located in the countryside, an easy 20 minute walk from the picturesque town of Trémolat. It should also be noted that there is a highly-regarded 'ferme auberge' (farm restaurant) on the property immediately next door (a short walk down a country lane). This restaurant is open for lunch and dinner most days. It is very reasonable and serves delightful local cuisine. Our guests always rave about their experiences at 'Les Truffieres'. There are three additional restaurants in Trémolat,m as well as a casual pizzeria. This is therefore an ideal location for either eating out, or enjoying a summer meal at home. A well-informed, local couple will welcome you and be of service during your stay, when needed.

Philosophy of the owners, Bill & Janice.: We are the proud owners of “Les Volets Bleus” & purchased and upgraded/renovated the property in June 2005. Although our home is in California, we have travelled a great deal in Western Europe & have rented many properties – some great, and some less than spectacular! We always appreciated cleanliness, comfort, good beds, furniture you could actually sit on (!), great linens & towels, appliances that really worked, and nice big wine glasses! After buying our dream home, our philosophy hasn’t changed - & we have upgraded the standard of the house to meet or exceed the best we’ve seen. Basically, we have designed it to be the way we’d like it if we arrived tired and hungry from across the world. We appreciate the chance that you take when you book on-line and hope that what you see is really what you’ll be getting! We guarantee that you will not be disappointed - in fact, many of our guests feel that the reality of the house exceeds their expectations.

Welcoming caretakers : We have excellent local caretakers who live on the next-door property. They will meet you personally and be available to address all your needs while your stay at our home. They are very well-versed in the house and the local area, and have been very popular with our guests. We also provide you with very detailed maps and directions for your arrival, as well as information on the area so that you know exactly where to find everything you might need: such as days and towns for the best local markets, and inside tips and suggestions from previous guests. We want you to have the best possible experience in this wonderful area of the Dordogne that offers so much in the way of scenery, markets, activities, food adventures, and wonderfully warm people.

The house, the owners and the situation have everything to make for a relaxing and comfortable stay. The house is owned and lived in, part of the year, by people who obviously have a taste for good living; so the house is equipped for their comfort and as a consequence the standard of accommodation is very high. All of the ammenities are of the highest quality, especially the beds which are fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets.

The owner could n't be more welcoming and actually took the time to book us into a couple of restaurants when I asked her for some recommendations. One knew instantly from talking to her that she welcomed guests into her house and really wished for them to have a nice holiday rather than what sometimes one feels is a grudging toleration of house guests for the sake of the money. The effects of this philosophy was felt all over the house:Well stocked Kitchen with non-stick pans (a rarity in rental places); beautiful wine glasses; Outside furniture and games materials to enjoy the outdoor life; Dvd players and a collection of DVDs to amuse adults and children; mosquito candles and repellents easy to hand for long evenings around the porch; the most beautiful pool you could hope for which was the centrepiece for the children's holiday; well detailed personalised list of local attractions including the local markets and restaurants. These personal touches really made you feel like you were staying at the house of a friend and put you at your ease as a result.

The surrounding area is beautiful and too quaint for words. The house, if you want to walk, is within a 10-15 minute walk along a track to the nearest village of Tremolat which has several restaurants (A michelin starred restaurant), 1 general store and a delightful boulangerie. Hypermarches are not too far away. The house is in a rural setting and only has as an immediate neighbour a paysanne style restaurant which looks great but is n't good for vegetarians (as is most of France).

Things we enjoyed
The pool, Lascaux caves, walks along the river, beautiful town of Sarlat, Dinner at the Le Vieux Logis, walking into Tremolat, Kayaking along the Dordogne, Lovely evenings around the big outdoors table with a couple of bottles of wine, visits to the local markets.
