One of only six houses in the hamlet of Le Mas, between the villages of Carlux and Calviac, it consists of a gite to accommodate 4/5 people and another unit kept for the use of the owners themselves. Set in 2.5 acres of garden and woodland. Approx 1.5 miles from the Dordogne river with magnificent views on all sides. A truly delightful spot providing tranquillity in the summer season away from the tourists yet within easy reach of Sarlat (10 miles), Souillac (8 miles) and all the many other attractions of the area. The food and wine of the area is an experience. Foie Gras,truffle and walnuts are all used extensively in the cuisine. A morning at the typical market in Sarlat or Gourdon is a must and there are many excellent restaurants and cafes at which to enjoy a Perigordine menu with local wine from Bergerac,Cahors or neighbouring Bordeaux. Visits to Les Eyzies for some of the best examples of caves and palaeontology. Fortified towns of Domme or Rocamador or La Roque Gageac.

The area: The nearby village has a small general store, boulangerie and boucherie or you can visit supermarkets in nearby towns. Swimming, fishing and canoeing in the river. For those who enjoy a good walk the Grande Randonnee (GR6) passes through Carlux or you may walk at will through the unspoilt woodlands and countryside.

A Place to let the rest of the world pass by

It depends what you want from a holiday, like many people our lives are quite busy and our hoildays are a time to slow down and relax.

So Le Mas, is situated in a village of about 10 other houses, mainly occupied by the locals. As you come out on the varanda in the mornings, you over look a scene of undulating trees, as the morning mist rises. The gite has is well maintained and comfortable for four, but five at a stretch. To the rear is a beautifully secluded swimming pool, where you can laze or swim depending on your mood. Of course if you have children, that choice may not be yours, as with most children, lazing is not an option.

If you want a physical challenge, the dordogne river is a few minutes away, where there is ample choice of canoe options, alternatively there is a high wire activity centre 15mins away, where British Health and Safety haven't touched, allowing an adventure without cotton wool! I am sure there are other active options, but we have never found the need to explore this route too far. If you like historical towns and villages, there are plenty around to explore if you choose.

There are a few shops in a nearby village, 20mins walk away, or the hypermarket is 15mins in the car.

When the evening comes, depending on your taste and wallet there are plenty of restaurants within a 20min car journey to suit your desires. If you want to abandon the car, there are a few restaurants in the locality which will allow you to walk and attempt to loose the weight you add. Alternatively you can bbq on the varanda, overlooking the same undulating trees, how better to finish the day than a glass of local wine in one hand and a piece of cheese in the other.

So a review is meant to give the pluses and the minuses. Our minus comment could be, that for us, one week is plenty, to refresh our energy cells, two weeks, might make us loose the desire to return. We have always had a car with us, we are not sure whether getting around by public means is a challenge.

We therefore unreservedly recommend Le Mas, for those of you who want a week of relaxation, a little exercise and food and drink to remember. In addition if the owners, Jo and Richard, are around, they will treat you like family, rather than paying guests.

Idyllic Week in the Dordogne

My friends and I had a fantastic week in what is a truly idyllic setting. The pool was fantastic and the weather allowed us to put this to good use. There is so much to do locally, golf, cycling, canoeing and of course wine to taste and restaurants too!
Lovely house, peaceful and with all the necessary facilities - great for two couples or a family.

A lovely little gite with pretty bedrooms, lovely private rear garden and superb pool, bigger than average, with a deep end for adult swimming and heated. Simply furnished but we found everything we needed and the holiday was well organised - beds made up for us, gite very clean and everything worked well.

The area offers plenty to do including canoeing, cycling, chateaux visits etc. We would be very happy to recommend this gite to others.
