The elegant separate dining room, too, looks out onto the unspoiled countryside. The private and heated pool can be enjoyed in all seasons, with a BBQ for variety. Satellite television and high speed internet access are provided. There is a game room with table tennis. The nearby villages of Marquay and Tamnies offer restaurants and shops. The house is on one of three hilltop villages within sight (and a short drive) of each other. The beautiful village of Tamnies captivates the visitor with deer, flower displays and an excellent restaurant. Its illuminated church tower is a landmark at night. Marquay, with fresh bread daily, offers several excellent restaurants. The house, Combe-Claire, is perched atop Escamps, a hamlet of just a few houses, free from intrusion and visitor activity. An enjoyable 15 minute drive to the south lies the medieval town of Sarlat; a similar distance to the west is Les Eyzies, the ‘capital of prehistory’, while to the north are the celebrated caves of Lascaux, where images of bison and deer, perhaps ancestors of the herd that still haunt the nearby fields, are to be seen.

| Notes: | This superb large house/villa has been designed by the renowned architect, Francois Coq. The style has been inspired by the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) with all the beauty of a Perigordine stone house and the modern facilities for maximum comfort. The entrance hall leads to a very large salon (over 67sq m) which enjoys the fantastic panoramic view of the valley, there are large doors leading to the outside terrace. The house has many features such as stone flooring, beautiful oak beams and a large stone open fire place. A separate dinning room has also marvellous views and doors that lead to the terrace. The principle bedroom is located on the ground floor. A mezzanine on the first floor also leads to a large balcony. The house is full of light and is beautifully decorated throughout. The 13m x 5m, heated non-chlorine swimming pool has a delightful waterfall. The pool's specifically designed Roman steps and soft padded lining are ideal for young children. |
Combe-Claire
Combe-Claire is a traditionally stone-built, country house/villa that offers all the modern conveniences to make your holiday comfortable and enjoyable. In spring the fruit trees blossom on the slopes surrounding the house. The deer pass by in the valley and wild boar occasionally forage in the local woods. In autumn the early morning mist gives way to warm sunshine that ripens the figs and walnuts. In the immediate surroundings it is easy to find an astonishing variety of wild mushrooms. Here is truly a place to relax, contemplate and unwind, yet it is superbly located so that all the region’s attractions can be visited with ease.
The Dordogne
The Dordogne or Périgord region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, well known to the French for its food and wine. There is a saying, “En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien”. Périgord is the home of the truffle and foie gras. Numerous local restaurants, with all regional delights, tempt the casual visitor. As a world centre of prehistory, the Dordogne offers countless caves for exploration. The world-renowned Lascaux and Font de Gaume, with their cave paintings and artefact's, are both close by. The national museum of prehistory, only 15 minutes away in Les Eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French Protestants. Across this region Simon de Montfort drove the Cathar heretics virtually to extinction at the foot of the Pyrenees.
Sarlat
Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns not only in the Dordogne, but in France. The atmosphere and appearance are of another age, with narrow, steep, beautiful alleys flanked by medieval and renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic listed buildings than any other place of its size in France and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guide solely for the quality and character of its old town. One of the largest weekly markets in France takes over most of the town every Saturday. There is also a Food Market in Sarlat every Wednesday. Throughout the summer there are musical festivals and art exhibitions in Sarlat and nearby towns. In the nocturnal markets there are bargains to be sought among the local crafts, food produce and Bergerac wines by the light of gas-illuminated street lamps. Sarlat is only 15-20 minutes drive away from Combe-Claire. A visit to Tourist Information Office in Sarlat is highly recommended.

There aren't enough superlatives for Combe Claire! It is truly one of the best holiday homes a family could wish for. Farah has been completely wonderful from start to finish, especially during a panic phone-call concerning a broken wine bottle and a profusely bleeding foot!
Nothing has been left to chance with this fabulous house. We have not wanted for any facility, nor been disappointed by any aspect of the extremely high quality (dare I say luxury?) specification of this amazing property. From the first glimpse of the house, driving round the tiny, winding road through Escamps, it's impressive facade gives instant 'WOW' factor. Combe Claire has a huge amount of outdoor space, including it's jewel, the 15m salinised pool; with a splendid fountain, a safe and soft shallow end, and enough room to have a good exercise swim as well. The open plan living arrangement downstairs is a masterstroke. The website pictures don't fully illustrate the amazing light, airiness of the sitting and dining areas, which is heightened by the sliding glass doors on all sides. The kitchen and utility rooms are superbly equipped, and a fabulous huge gas BBQ in addition allowed us to have a variety of meals in our (all too short) week's stay. The master suite downstairs opens directly onto the pool edge, whoever manages to pick this room is in for a real treat - but then again all the bedrooms are en-suite, air-conditioned, and very good sizes!!
Combe Claire gives an excellent base for exploring the Dordoyne - although once you've stayed there, you'd be forgiven for sitting back and enjoying the view, the facilities, the peace and the perfection. We can't wait to come back, Farah, thanks once again for your outstanding property and for caring so much about our stay. Cheers!!
Owner's response:
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write this review. We were sorry to hear about your accident and glad to know that it was dealt with so efficiently. It is impressive that you, an English GP, were so well cared for at the local French hospital. We have not had to test out the local medical services ourselves yet, but are encouraged by your experience. I have spoken with many people who have used French health care and they all have been very complimentary. And, once again, you say that the house and facilities actually outperform the photos – so often it is, alas, the other way round.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay, come what may!
Kind regards
