The former province of Périgord, now known as the Dordogne after the river which runs through it, is also known as the cradle of humanity because of the many prehistoric sites attesting to man's occupation from early days. The 'capital' of prehistoric remains is Les Eyzies de Tayac, at the confluent of the Vézère and the Beune, where the National Museum of Prehistoric Remains is to be found. Sarlat La Canada is a medieval market town in the centre of the Perigord Noir area. The old part of the town contains cobbled streets and historic buildings, including a large cathedral. Domme is most often described as one of the most attractive and dramatic of all the Bastides. From the Belvédère it enjoys the most commanding view of the Dordogne River. To the west, Beynac and La Roque-Gageac are visible, it is a town to be wandered through and savoured, for it is dotted with attractive streets and well-tendered balconied houses of golden stone. Its history goes back to 1280.

Enjoy breakfast on the large south facing terrace in the early morning sun before lounging beside the private pool while the children play with the toys provided. The villa is favourably situated with several castles, prehistoric sites, museums and medieval towns such as Sarlat all within a few miles. Summer in the Perigord can be hot, so have lunch or dinner in the shade and comfort of the covered north terrace, taking in the glorious view over countryside to the Bastide town of Domme 2 miles away. We have taken a number of holidays in the Dordogne over the years but this has to be the best property we have rented. Far better than we were expecting as the description and photographs cannot convey the attractiveness of the property both inside and out. Everything is provided and spotless on arrival. We were a party of 6 adults, 1 child aged 2 and a baby.
Fantastic views across the valley to Domme and the early morning mist rising from the Dordogne river is a sight not to be missed.
We will be back
