Further details for this holiday chateau / country house rental in Montlaur, France

Around the Mills: The ancient miller's house, where we live, is near the mills. Our ten acres of 'garigue' surrounding the mills has wild thyme, rosemary, mint and lavender among many other plants growing wild and has supposedly medicinal properties. It certainly emits a gorgeous perfume. We have our own little vineyard. We have dogs, cats, chickens (fresh eggs), horses, and parrots. So, though we adore animals you will not be able to bring yours. Our little dogs, Fifi and puppy William, both Coton de Tulears, adore visitors and will welcome you to our grounds. For more photos of 'La Couscouillette' as our country estate is called, and stories about our animals please email us so I can send you the URL of our personal Webpage. Golf at 25 minutes from the mills at Carcassonne nearby the famous Cite Medieval of Carcassonne.

Village Activities: The friendly, wine producing village provides walks, excursions and village open air dances and (occasionally) meals in the summer. The small supermarket has a Wifi Hotspot outiside, there's a baker, butcher, post office and pharmacy. Our horses are not suitable for riding but horses can be rented locally, either on the outskirts of Montlaur or at L’Eperon Cathare, there all levels are taken from 10 years up. Route de l’Abbaye, Lagrasse (about 20 minutes from Montlaur). Guest Book: June 18th -July 1st 2005 Sloping Roof Mill. Such a beautiful area + beautiful location for a home. We have enjoyed the views and the village life and also the riches that the locality has to offer:wine, food, scenery, Agde, castles, history, weather...(+cake!). We will never forget William a Fifi and William. We much enjoyed our nightly BBQ - as did Plato - in fact he got quite sulky when we didn't have one! Most of all we'll remember your warm hospitality and friendship - Kirstin & Jam

Sightseeing, Historical, Gastronomic: Gastronomic delights in the region are numerous. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the luxury of world famous French Cuisine at very reasonable prices. Fantastic sightseeing: for instance the famous Medieval Walled City of Carcassonne is reached in 25 minutes. There are beautful abbeys nearby and of course the Cathar Castles, from the early Middle Ages, are worth a visit. In fact, the mill itself dates from the Cathar period (1266) and is probably the first windmill in the South of France. Drive through beautiful countryside to the Dinosaur museum at Esperaza. It's at an hour's drive from here and it will take you back 70 million years.

Sloping Roof Windmill

Notaplumber lincolnshire, uk
Review Submitted: May 26, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Two of us stayed for a very enjoyable week at the Sloping Roof Windmill in May. Owners on hand were helpful but discrete. Views from the site are breathtaking. The pool is immaculately maintained. The mill itself is `cosy` and had everything we needed - even fresh eggs on demand ! Not sure we would have liked it as much with 4 people in the mill, but for 2 it was fine. The road up to the mill is somewhat steep & `tight` and not for the faint-hearted but this added to the adventure of staying in a 13thC Windmill ! We lunched at a different restaurant each day in the area and never had a bad meal. All in all an excellent stay for us.

A place to get away from it all

Review Submitted: April 9, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
When I found this rental online, the history and location sounded so appealing. After contacting the owner, and making the deposit, I was happily surprised at how easy it was to plan this trip. The owner sent me information on the windmills, the surrounding property and village, so we were well prepared and found the property quite easily.

Montlaur is located about half an hour from Carcassone, making it a central spot for touring the area by car. The windmills are perched on a hilltop over the small village and has the most fantastic views, especially sunsets.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we had rain and high winds for half of our stay in early May. However, that did not stop us from walking around the property which still maintains that natural rugged openness from years gone by.

The owners were most accommodating and made us feel very welcomed with fresh eggs and wine. The new pool was inviting (although not quite warm enough while we were there) and we did dangle our legs in the water and enjoyed the sun on the deck when it did make its appearance.

There are two lovely horses and two dogs which we thoroughly enjoyed visiting with. The horses are allowed a free run on their fenced area and it was thrilling to watch them and the neighbouring horses running along the hills.

The windmill itself was very quaint and cosy. There were four of us (two couples) sharing the mill which has the kitchen and dining area on the ground level. The kitchen had modern appliances and was stocked with every cooking utensil needed.

Climbing up the curved steps was a bit of a challenge especially with luggage, and I made sure to hold on to the bannister, so I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone with leg or back problems.

The bedrooms were very basic and tiny, but we expected that. There was one bathroom on the middle floor which was tiny but adequate with the most fascinating window and view! The double bed was a futon type and adequate. The top floor had two twin beds with very basic furnishings.

Overall, the property is ideal for a couple or a young family (not babies or toddlers though) or very close friends as there is a lot of space sharing! I personally liked the property but my husband found it a bit cramped. He admits if the weather had been better, he would have enjoyed it more. My girlfriend and I would like to return one day for a ladies week bringing our cameras to capture the breathtaking area.
