Places to visit
CARCASSONNE – With over 3 million visitors each year, the medieval fortified cité is one of France’s most visited tourist sites., and on 14th July, plays host to a most spectacular fireworks display. On the other side of the river, lies the bastide town, with its narrow streets of houses, shops and restaurants, constructed on a grid pattern from the 13th century. This is the land of the Cathars, and the historic stories of the crusades against them. The surrounding dramatic landscape is dotted with numerous hilltop castles. REVEL and its market – (5 minutes) Listed as one of the best markets in France, and recently featured in the TV programme “French Leave”, this source of gourmet foods and wines is on your doorstep! Held every Saturday in the heart of the town, the market square is bordered by medieval houses with galleries underneath. In the centre of the square, a large tiled roof supported by a forest of ancient oak pillars and beams is topped by a belfry.
SOREZE – (5 minutes) The old village is classified as a historical site for its medieval streets lined by 17th and 18th century half-timbered and corbelled houses. Sorèze owes its fame to the Abbey-School founded in the eighth century. It became a seminary, then a royal military academy under the reign of Louis XVI, and through the quality of its instruction, gave Sorèze an international reputation. At the gates of the High-Languedoc Regional Nature Park, this is an excellent starting point for outdoor activities and exploring a region particularly rich in culture and history. LAKE ST. FERREOL – (10 minutes) Constructed in the seventeenth century and covering 154 acres, this is the oldest artificial lake in Europe and was built to feed the Canal du Midi. The site includes an 80 hectare park, cascades, a geyser and shady paths ideal for walks, bike rides or picnics and the area abounds with tourist activities - pedaloes, tennis, horse riding, mini golf, fishing etc.
ALBI – Standing proudly on the banks of the river Tarn, this is a city where art and history stand side by side in one of the best preserved old towns in France. The former 13th century archbishop’s palace, houses the celebrated Museum of the artist Toulouse-Lautrec who was born in Albi in 1864. More than 1000 pictures are housed in the museum, including all of the 31 posters he designed. TOULOUSE - Known as the 'pink city' because of its brick architecture, and home of the Space centre. Top shopping! CANAL DU MIDI - for waterside walks or bike rides or even hire a boat for the day. WINE - The Languedoc region offers dozens of opporunities to taste and buy dozens of wines. Take your pick!
