The auberge is set in the sleepy, quiet, village of Bouriege which is surrounded by vineyards, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the heart of Cathar country in the Languedoc. Our three story, four bedroom village house has been lovingly restored and period furnished. Down the small alley at the back of the house is the 'secret garden' A old stone wall enclosed garden full of roses and grapevines as well as a barbeque and hammock. Adjacent to the house is a two bedroom, two storey converted stone barn; its interior balcony overlooks the open studio loft space with a corner kitchen, and the 'secret garden ' Down the road, next to a stream is our second garden where we play croquet and badminton or just lounge in the hammock. These houses while completely independent are just next door to each other and rented together are wonderful for a large house party.

The auberge is on three floors and has a rustic feel to it. The furnishings are local farm antiques. On the ground floor is the kitchen, fully equipped with large five-burner gas range, copper cookware, old stone bread oven, and dishwasher. Through the kitchen is the dining room with plenty of candelabras for candlelit dinners. Up one flight of stairs is the main large bathroom and opposite is a bedroom with one double bed. On this floor is also the living room, full of books, music and lots of light. On the top floor is the yellow skylit attic bedroom with adjoining study/dressing area. ( Often an ideal set up for parents with a young child) At the top of the stairs to the right is another bedroom, the blue room, with a double bed and a large skylight. Next to this is a bathroom. On the left is another smaller bedroom, the red room, with two double beds and a skylight. Adjascent to the house is a walled garden perfect for enjoying the beautiful climate of the south of Frandce.

Bouriege is located in the southwest of France in the foothills of the Pyrenees,11 km west of Limoux in the heart of Cathar Country. Our house makes a perfect base to discover the the beauty of the Languedoc- its vinyards and chateaux, the stunning countryside and small villages, its local food and wines. Explore the medieval walled city of Carcassonne-spend the day in Mirepoix a beautiful half timbered market town. Head to the beaches of Perpignan or indulge yourself at the hot spring Spa in Rennes Les Bain. We are 1.5 hours from Spain and a beautiful coastal 4 hr. drive to Barcelona.

Notes: There are two gardens. The 'secret garden' is a small stone walled garden filled with roses and grapevines, the all important hammock,and a swing and simple barbeque for dining outdoors. The second garden, further down the village, runs alongside a stream and has cherry, apple, pear and plum trees round its edge. There is a central lawn where we often play croquet and badminton or lie in the hammock.

Fantastic, quirky house full of charm and surprise

We had a lovely week in Bouriege. The house was delightful, and Nike and Alvin were most welcoming. We all particulary enjoyed the fantastic large bathroom and bath. The secret garden was a delight for sitting in in the evening and enjoying a barbecue. The children loved going down to the big garden - to sit or run around. We loved the old-fashioned charm and the comfortable beds. Obviously, a lot of thought has gone into the restoration of this house. The kitchen was fabulous - we loved the feeling of having gone back a few decades to a more romantic time - the huge cooker, the old farmhouse furniture - and all the candles everywhere. Thanks for a great week.

Favourite outings were to the mountains - all those gorgeous gorges. Carcassonne was better than expected, and we enjoyed the degustation at local vineyards.

Absolutely amazing! We stayed in Auberge No. 1. Bouriege is in the middle of a beautiful nowhere, but accessible to the outer world with a car - be sure to take the bicycles out, take a long walk, or relax in the garden. The kitchen/ dining room is a dream kitchen for those who like to cook and have candlelit dinners ;)  Be sure to do your shopping before you settle in- There are great local markets during different days of the week, but Limoux has great supermarkets to fill in with the extra things you may need. The place is exactly as pictured with lots of charm. The auberge is well equipped with linens, dishes, staple products etc. and the hosts  friendly, fabulous and full of good ideas.  Enjoy!
