LA COUMO, Lovely house & pool between historic hilltop village & moors

La Coumo looks over the hilltop village of Laurac le Grand -- listed as a national monument --and the moors and valleys of the Lauragais. It is a traditional house, well-modernised, with pretty interior, cool in the summer and snug in winter with its wood-burning stove. The garden, which is not overlooked, has lawn and terrace beside the pool and trees and veranda for shade. The open pool can easily be enclosed by a 'glasshouse' shelter to make for warmer and cleaner bathing when needed. Here is the peace and quiet of the deep countryside with shops, markets, vineyards & restaurants and other facilities nearby.

Notes to the rental rates

• These rates include all services, heating, electricity, bedding and towels (2 per person)for indoor use. There is an additional charge of £90 for Xmas, New Year & Easter weeks. There is sometim!es a small surcharge for bank-charges incurred in receiving euros, depending on bank practices. . We ask for 25% of the rent as deposit to secure a booking, the rest payable two months before start-date of the holiday.

Around Laurac Le Grand

Laurac is no longer ‘grand’ as it was in the Middle Ages, but it is interesting to explore its quiet traffic-free lanes and speculate on its turbulent history, or to walk from the house directly on to the moor-land paths and into its little valleys where you can find wildlife, wild flowers (particularly orchids and lavender) and fine views. A short car-drive will take you to the lovely banks of the Canal du Midi, or the markets of Castelnaudary and Mirepoix (the latter in a perfect medieval arcaded town-square), or just a little further to the battlements of Carcassonne – or if you want to taste local wines and food we can arrange visits to vineyards, farms and village fetes……

Touring in the Aude & the Ariége

Situated between the mountains of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast, there is much to see -- abbeys, old churches, castles, pretty villages and fortified towns – or imposing cities like Toulouse, Perpignan, Narbonne -- museums like those of Toulouse-Lautrec and Salvador Dali, cave-paintings like those of Niaux -- or further afield, Spain & Andorra….On fine AutoRoute and quiet back-roads where driving a car is still a pleasure. But you may want to spend most of your time just floating in the pool, browsing in the sun or dining outdoors in the shade --- and if the children get bored (which is unlikely) you can always bring them to see the animals on our nearby farm !
