Just 1.5km from the sea, this house with its utilitarian style and large south-facing garden is in the heart of a traditional Mediterranean village. Main bedroom has views of the ocean and the Corbieres. A great base for exploring the long, sandy, Blue Flag beaches, the dramatic hinterland dotted with historic fortresses from the bloody anti-Cathar Crusade, and the Pyrenees - nearest ski resort is less than 2 hours' drive away. The village boasts tennis courts, indoor swimming pool, a regular market and many shops and restaurants. Own private parking leads on through the garden to the main entrance into the kitchen and L-shaped dining/sitting room with wood-burning stove and two sofa beds. Down to three double bedrooms and bathroom at street level, up to main bedroom with ensuite on top floor. Dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, central heating. Linen/towels can be provided on application. Nearest airport Perpignan 0.5 hrs or Girona, Carcassonne or Toulouse all within 1.5 hours.

Leucate Village is a traditional, friendly, wine and fishing community. Just down the coast is the modern marina and holiday development, Port Leucate. From the ruined fortress above the village, you can see on one side the sea and clean, silver beaches; on the other the ruggedly romantic Corbieres, a historic wine area; to the north, plateau and lakes rich with wildlife reaching to the bustling Narbonnne, ancient Rome's first colony; to the south, the equally bustling and historic Perpignan, capital of French Catalonia, and the snow-capped Pyrenees, gateway to Spain. All Languedoc-Roussillon's riches are in easy reach: its wines, its cuisine, its cultural and natural heritage. The fairytale towers of Carcassonne's medieval city are 45 minutes away, Toulouse's aerospace museum not much further. Push on through Perpignan to Pyrenean fortresses, wildlife reserves and skiing resorts running into Andorra. The famous Dali Museum at Figueres in Spanish Catalonia is an easy day trip too.

Notes: A 25m track leads to private parking for two cars at the back of the house (free public parking opposite). This is the main entrance, into the richly laid-out garden with separate drying area and down onto a wide sunny gravel terrace with large table and BBQ. Small steps go up to a modern platform over a dry gulley into the kitchen/living area. Alternatively one can enter by the 'front door' at street level into one of the twin bedrooms (three bedrooms are at this level), up to the kitchen/living area and on to top floor via a steep winding staircase with solid balustrade typical of the region's ancient terraced houses. The living area boasts two large sofa beds, dining space for 20, hifi, ample books, games, electric radiators and a modern wood-burning stove. The house is furnished in industrial/utilitarian style which makes it quirkily attractive, comfortable and simple to keep clean and look after for care-free holiday making. It is a place to feel relaxed around and have fun.

Special Festivals in Leucate: There are two festivals of note in Leucate to which crowds flock. These are the Mondial du Vent, an international wind and kite surfing festival held in the week of 10-18 April 2010, and the spectacular Sol y Fiesta which will be over the weekend of 13-15 May 2010.

Getting to the Beach: If you do not want to drive to the beach there is now a shuttle bus service in the High Season which is free, very regular and takes you easily to the main blue flag beach 1.5 km away from the house.

Other Activities: canoeing, sand-yachting, kite-surfing, wine-tasting, cinema, ruined fortresses.

Enjoyed two weeks here in July 2008. Plenty of space for us all (mum, dad and five children). Took a little while to find the property. Very good location close to the centre of the village but also quiet with good neighbours. Lovely village with all facilities you would need if you did not want to travel away with many market days, good shops and restaurants. Wonderful beaches very close by with lifeguards. Quite windy as is typical of this area so be careful of sun during middle of day. Plenty of interesting things to do nearby for example Parcours Aventures and Aqualand which are both enjoyable for children and adults. House is quite well equiped although kitchen area was quite small it was well laid out and had everything you need for catering. The house was very clean and tidy when we arrived.
Car parking at the property and nearby was good.
Leucate is certainly one of the best places in this area to stay especially if you do not want a very commercialised holiday location. We would recommend and most certainly will visit again.
The owner was extremely helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

Bonjour,
On étais un groupe de 8 jeunes personnes entre 14 et 26 ans, et chaccun etait bien content des possibilités que la maison et le jardin nous ont donné. Assez de place, trés bonne propreté, femme de ménage super sympatique. Le jardin est un très grand plus, en a manger tout les matin est soir dehors, ce qui était très agrèable :o)
Les livres,brochures sur perpignan et allentours étaient super pratique, on puvaient bien les utiliser.
On court, je voudrais revenir encore un fois.....

Practical townhouse in authentic village

We had the pleasure of renting this house in the summer of 2009. Two norwegian families - four adults and five children 4-14- years old - fit in smugly and were very relaxed in the robust and utilitarian yet tasteful interior of the house. The house is located in the centre of Leucate village which is a charming village and a functioning society not overwhelmed by tourism. We in particular enjoyed sitting in the garden in the evening, having dinner or playing cards. The house is very adequately eqiupped and was cool and pleasant, Truly great beach in walking distance for the adults/elderly children but transportation is recommended for toddlers/preschoolers. Easy access to all necessary amenities. Relaxed region, not as crowded and busy as Provence/the riviera, yet numerous places to see by car. We recommend in particular the interior/mountain areas including Villefranche and Carcassonne for great medieval trips.

Great place to stay in Leucate Village

We were a large family group 4 adults and 7 children (5-15yrs) on a half term windsurfing holiday (8 days) End October.
The plan was to sleep the 7 kids and 2 adults in the house, whilst we (Grandparents) slept in our VW van close by or at the etang / beach. In the event - bar one night - we all were in the house, we using a click-clack bed in the sitting room.
Finding it =-very helpful instructions - no problem
Location = very good close by shops / market / nice views.
Nearby = everything we could ask for within short distance
Parking = space for 2 but tight if large cars - easy, safe parking just opposite
House = as described - great to have the large spaces and dining area for us all. Smallish but very productive kitchen, clean bathrooms, wacky huge upstairs bedroom. Kids loved it and as it was handy to have room and big tables to lay out their artwork / shell neclaces etc.
Heating = unusual cold snap when we were there but woodburner took care of that!
Facilities = all worked fine - some old-fashioned items gave a timeless feeling to the house.
Garden = a veritable herb treasure - we used lots for tea and cooking.
Communication with owner = excellent and very helpful
Arriving / Leaving = local lady checked us in and out - no problems.
Overall = Can't wait to get back again - its the kind of house where you can relax and chill out after energetic days! This place will work any time of year
