The village of Puivert and the Chateau |
'La Dame Blanche, a delightful 16 C village house for all seasons!
Using the house's unique open plan layout and split level living and dining area, the owners have created a modern, luxurious and comfortable environment within the context of a 16th century setting, including ancient exposed oak beams, rafters and rustic stone walls. Double french doors lead to a large south facing paved, landscaped terrace and garden. The open stair case leads to the second floor which consists of three large double bedrooms, a twin bedroom and a second bathroom, all electrically heated. The bedrooms have been arranged in the European style enabling the choice of king beds or pairs of single beds, each made up with separate all-season duvets. Bedrooms offer splendid rural views through shuttered windows from the comfort of your bed.

Puivert is located in the deep south of the Aude, an area of profound beauty and history and one that has yet to be invaded by the tourist hordes. Puivert, itself, has its own 11th C castle, Puivert Chateau. Of all the Cathar castles this is certainly one of the best preserved. IN SUMMER, Puivert offers swimming, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and abseiling, all centred around the gorges of the Aude river as well as horse riding, hiking and scenic drives. Taking the ‘Route du Payes Cathar’, discover the famous fortresses and Chateaux throughout the region: the most famous of them all, La Cite in Carcassonne. The Pyrenees, the beaches of the Mediterranean, the waterways of the Canal du Midi, the vineyards of Limoux, the colourful markets of Mirepoix, Couiza, and Espereza, the countryside of Spain and the ski fields of Andorra are all short trips away. IN WINTER, there are a variety of ski stations in the Pyrenees to choose from, making Puivert a great choice for a winter holiday.
Local activities swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, ski, water skiing, mountain biking, mountaineering, paragliding

More about Puivert
Puivert has its own lake, 'Le Lac'. With clean water, sandy beach and Buvette serving tasty meals throughout the summer months and only 5 minutes walk from our front door, it is just the place for relaxing in the sun. Behind the beach, there is a tennis court, volley ball court and a boule-a-dome. The Gliding Club is nearby Le Lac, on the plain, where horse riding can also be arranged. Cycling, mountain bike riding and hiking are ideal for naturalists and photographers, alike. Puivert has an excellent boulangerie and just up from the village square there is a mini-supermarket offering everything that you may require. There is also a café/bar/tabac, restaurant and post office. The charcuterie and primeur visit the market square twice weekly and during the summer months, Puivert has a Wednesday evening market.
Surrounding area
The charming village of Chalabre is 10 minutes away and has markets, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, banks, chemists, doctors, dentists and a petrol station, all to suit your needs. A suggested day trip to take in the beauty of the surrounding area might be to take the D12 to Chalabre, then D620 to Limoux. On the way and surrounding Limoux, stop at the many ‘caves’ and taste the famous ‘blanquette’ (the pre curser to champagne), and buy. Once in Limoux, take the D118 to Carcassonne. Or visit Rennes le Chateau. Once in Carcassonne, visit the famous la Cite, a must, have lunch in the embattlement. If time you have time, continue up to the famous Minervois wine growing area to the north east of Carcassonne. If not retrace the road back toward Quillan, via the D118 and 9km south of Limoux take a left turn into Alet-les-Bains, a medieval village, a must. Stop for dinner at Hostellerie de l’Elveche, a former Bishop’s palace. Or head back to Puivert, via Montazels, Esperaza, and Rouvenac.
Other Activities White water rafting, abseiling.
Skiing Information:
Puivert’s best kept secret is its proximity to a range of amazingly challenging down hill skiing, cross country skiing and snow shoeing, with beginner through to black run terrain. The winter months offer skiable snow on the nearby mountains with the nearest ski resort only 20 minutes away at Camurac or Mont d'Olmes. You can ski all day then return in the evening to an authentic French village and relax by the huge open fireplace, glass of wine in hand, music playing, reliving the day’s thrills and spills on the slopes! Further afield are Ax-les-Thermes and Andorra’s party town, Pas de la Cosa or the beautiful Soleu, couldn’t be easier! These resorts offer amazingly challenging down hill/cross country skiing & snow shoeing, with beginner through to black run terraine. The cost of ski hire & ski passes are extremely cheap, as is the food & wine, particularly in Andorra – Europe’s duty free destination!
