Charmingly restored 19th century village house. Villelongue is a small, peaceful, medieval village surrounded by hills, vineyards and sunflower fields, where life is going in a friendly and genuine atmosphere away from touristy high-roads. The village is a rural, truly relaxing resort where to enjoy numerous local attractions and activities; Being in the heart of the Cathar region you are also in easy reach to numerous spectacular historic sights, as the famous Medieval Cite of Carcasonne, to the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees and Andorra. The house is a tastefully renovated stone-house, where exposed timber-beans, titled floors and sand-stone-walls have preserved all its ancient charm. On the ground-floor a spacious combined living room kitchen with a big fireplace, a stove, a big table for meals, and a fully equipped kitchen. There you also find a laundry-room with shower and a toilette. On the first floor there are 3 bedrooms and a big bathroom.

The Village. You arrive to Villelongue trough the vineyards by winding roads going nowhere else. There you will find yourself away from the usual tourist-track in a peaceful, genuine French village with its medieval church on the hilltop, surrounded by old stone-houses and narrow lanes. By the feet of the church  with a splendid view - there is a small marketplace with a little café - in summertime open in the evenings. The village has its own mayor house, post office and school. A baker is passing every day, bringing fresh bread to your door. The village is inhabited by about 200 persons, most of them wine-growers. They produce excellent chardonnay-wine and the speciality of the region; Blanquette de Limoux, a sparkling white wine. Although it is out of track you are only 30min drive from Carcasonne and the local airport served by Ryanair, and only 10 minutes from the town of Limoux.

  • The house is on the outskirt of the village. You enter the house by an ancient arch. There  inside the courtyard- you enjoy absolute privacy. The garden is facing south-est and offers a magnificent view over hilly vineyards, small villages on the hilltops around, winding roads and the beginning of the Pyreenes. In the garden there is a big table with a parasol, and a smaller table-group under the shadow of the grape-wines. There are sun chairs and a barbeque. The house is a 19-centuary growers-house, carefully renovated to keep its old and genuine charm. Ground floor; directly from the garden you enter the spacious open living/kitchen (50m/2). Here - like in old French farmhouses - the generous table for meals and the big fireplace is the heart of the house. The kitchen is fully equipped (gas-stove with electric oven, micro, dishwasher and a refrigerator). Here there is a laundry room with shower, and WC. First floor: 3 bedrooms a big bathroom with window and WC.

Notes to the rental rates

A reduction is offered for the second week. Interesting rates for 3 weeks and more. For long term-renting. Please contact the owner for a special agreement. 25% deposit( non refundable) is required to secure the booking. The balance is payable 8 weeks prior to arrival. A Damage Deposit of 200 Eur. is required. It should be sent by cheque at the same time as your final payment. I t will be held in case of no damage and returned to you by post after departure. Electricity is included in summer. From Oct. 1st - May 31st electricity will be charged at cost based on meter reading. Cleaning; Guests are asked to leave the house and its contents in the same clean state as they found it at arrival. If you prefer not to clean the house before departure , we can bring in local cleaners for an additional charge of 60 Eur. If you are unable to clean the house before departure you will be charged by the same 60 Eur. Bed linen and towels are included and washed after your departure.

Activities around

On every hilltop around you will find small villages like Villelongue, still untouched by modern tourism. Here you can enjoy local attractions like visiting caves with wine tasting, music-festivals and local fêtes-de-villages with open-air dances and meals. Almost every day  in one of the villages  you will find a market with fresh vegetables and cheeses from the area, traditional specialities and handicraft. In the medieval town of Mirepoix, with its half-timbered houses facing the square, there is much appreciated market on Mondays, really worth visiting. In only 10min drive you have the small town of Limoux with its charming `piazza´ with cafés, restaurants and all sorts of shops. For walking, cycling and horse riding there are wonderful paths just out-doors, through a shifting, rolling landscape of wine-yards, hills and mountains. In 25 min drive you have Lake of Montbel for swimming and wind-surfing. Nearby Thesra are also swimming pools with spring-water.

Sightseeing, historical,

In only an hours drive you have the long beaches of the Mediterranean and fishing ports as Sête, Agde and Collioure, the montaines of the Pyrenees and Andorra. The area is rich on historical sites, like the many Cathar-castels with its amazing history. Rennes- les -Chateaux - for example - is one of the inspirations for the novel The Da Vinci Code. The famous Medivial City of Carcasonne is well-known and also held a famous International Festival in July with theatre, dance and concerts. Worth-visiting is also the prehistoric Grottes de Niaux.
