Tucked away in an 18th century rural domaine, this beautiful detached villa is located in rolling farmland between the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire, 45 minutes from the Mediterranean, close to Carcassonne and just five minutes from the Canal du Midi. The villa, converted and equipped as a permanent home, set in its own garden of half an acre, with BBQ, chairs, tables, roses, flowerbeds, fruit trees, grapevines and shady pines, with views across fields of sunflowers and barley towards the heat-hazed Montagne Noir. Le Pigeonnier has been exquisitely restored around the original pigeon-tower to incorporate stonework buildings enclosing a sunlit courtyard and pool, with dining facilities, sun loungers and tubs of bougainvillea, plumbago and pelargonium. The elegant sejour with its massive fireplace, the dining room, and comfortable bedrooms, all with beamed ceilings, are furnished with antiques and lovely soft furnishings.The fully fitted kitchen, is matched by modern bathrooms.

Notes: The property is not suitable for the very young or non-agile due to the steep open staircase in the Pigeonnier tower. The pool area being surrounded on three sides by the house , a wall on the fourth side and with gated access to the garden is secure. Swimming towels not provided. Heating/Fans provided depending on the season. Library of books, CDs, DVDs, videos and tapes available for guests use. Boules, board games and pool toys provided for guests use.

The Region: The entire region has a wealth of history & charm to discover & this property is well situated should you choose to follow the 'Cathar trail' with its wonderful hilltop castles or discover Da Vinci Code sites. The ancient cité of Carcassonne with its fairytale spires never fails to excite both young & old alike. The wonderful 'Rose' city of Toulouse is worth a visit and its Cité Espace is a must for a great family day out. There are rolling hills & countryside as you are close to the foothills of the Pyrenees & Andorra itself is approximately 2hrs drive away. The coastal border with Spain is easily accessible & the Dali museum in Figueras a manageable & memorable day trips. For most guests the only problem is finding enough time to experience all this region has to offer & with such a charming house & pool the temptation is to just relax & enjoy the time without straying very far.

Travel: AIR: - Airports within 1 hour's drive - Carcassonne, Perpignan, Toulouse. - Services from most major cities in Europe to Toulouse - The following cities in the UK & Ireland have flights to the area (some seasonal)- Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guernsey, Jersey, London, Nottingham East Midlands, Southampton. - Flights from the UK & Ireland are offered by Air France, BA, BMI, BMIbaby, Easyjet, Flybe and Ryanair TRAIN: - TGV service to Toulouse and Montpellier and onwards to Carcassonne on regular train services. CAR - Drive time from northern France is 8-12 hours. The villa is 10 minutes from junction 22 on the A61.

Auf dem Land und doch nicht

Das Negative vorab: die Beschreibungen dieses Hauses am Land sind zwar korrekt, es liegt allerdings nur 500m von der Autobahn entfernt und dazu in der Einflugschneise des Flughafens von Carcassonne (wird von Ryanair angeflogen). Wer sich für dieses Domizil entscheidet, sollte sich sicher sein, dass er gegenüber Verkehrslärm je nach Wetterlage nicht übersensibel ist.
Ansonsten findet man ein absolut liebevoll und komfortabel eingerichtes Landhaus vor, hier versprechend die Fotos nicht zuviel - es gibt viel Ambiente mit altem Gemäuer und antiken Möbel sowie ein Wohnzimmer in der Größe eines Ballsaals. Die Zimmer im Turm sind etwas klein und über die Treppe beschwerlich zu erreichen, allerdings auch nett eingerichtet, unter dem Dach könnte es im Sommer etwas heiß werden. Mit Mücken hatten wir in Pfinstferien entgegen unseren Erwartungen kein Problem.
Die Küche ist komplett eingerichtet, das Geschirr ist sicherlich nicht das hochwertigste, allerdings für den Urlaub ausreichend. Der Pool ist ausreichend groß, muss selbst gepflegt werden, die Pumpe kann, wenn sie nervt, abgeschalten werden (anschalten nicht vergessen, sonst kippt das Wasser), an Pfingsten war das Wasser noch gut frisch. Zum Grillen und auch sonst ist alles sehr vollständig vorhanden, wir haben nichts vermisst. Leider keine Fahrräder.
Für die Unterkunft ist ein Auto erforderlich, alle Höhepunkte der Region sind gut erreichbar: Carcassonne, Montagne Noire, Burgen, Mittelmeer. Einkaufen am Besten in Bram (neuer Supermarkt an der Autobahnauffahrt, mittwochs toller Markt). Die Infos von den Hausbesitzern sind sehr hilfreich und nützlich.
