Paraza is a small village on the UNESCO protected Canal du Midi in SW France. It is just 45 minutes from Carcassonne & Bezier airport, and one hour from Perpignan,Montpellier & Toulouse. The nearest international airport is Barcelona two hours south. The area is famous for its historic chateaus and Cathar castles, the most famous being the walled city of Carcassonne which is an absolute must-see. There are many fine, sandy beaches close by, Narbonne-Plage & Gruissan being the closest at 30 minutes. To the north you will find the Orb valley where you can swim or go on fully organised canoe trips, not to be missed! The village itself has two restaurants, one right on the banks of the canal, a small shop with daily bread, tennis court & play area. Several days a week vendors call in the square next to the shop selling fish, fruit and vegetables. There are many daily markets in the neighbouring villages & the city of Narbonne with its cathedral has plenty of shops, hypermarket & food hall.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Paraza, France

We have a new caretaker from this year, she has lived in the village for many years and used to have a restaurant here. She now does table d'hote, upon arrangement she will cook a meal and serve at her lovely village house with terrace overlooking the Canal, or if preferred served at our house. Full details are available at the house.

There are two restauants in the village, one French owned serving traditional local fare and the other on the banks of the canal which is run by an English couple that have lived in Paraza for many years serving local food prepared expertly by the chef who has many years of experience from around the world. Both restaurants serve good local wine, very cheap if you order the carafe, and both have outdoor dining in the summer. In high season they are open lunchtimes but you would need to check for times & booking is advisable in high season.

From this year the beautiful Chateau du Paraza is open for wine tasting and also tours of the chateau.

For the sports fans the neighbouring village of Roubia has an excellent restaurant owned by a young English couple & last year they converted the separate lower level into a sports bar complete with flat screen TV showing English soccer/rugby/cricket etc matches, Guiness, bitter & cider on tap (don't worry though they still have excellent Roubia wine!) They are open lunchtimes too and serve wonderful fish 'n chips, curry, fresh burgers & salads at really reasonable prices but in the evenings you can eat in style in the restaurant or on the terrace with the swallows swooping around the old square.

What a life

Review Submitted: July 28, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
Just back from Paraza (wish i was still there).Had a lovely time, the house was very well equipped and very clean and also very easy to find.We loved the market in Leizignan, about 10 mins drive.Went to Carcassonne Cite really lovely .Bought some wine in the Chateau -wine tasting open everyday.
This is a good base for exploring this area. Geant in narbonne very handy for big shop.Took a trip to le perthus at the pyrennes - plenty of cheap spirits(and cigs ,if required)-only an hours drive. We even seen the tour de France as it passed through nearby village. The village has a small shop where you can get fresh bread ,long life milk ,vegtables etc.and everyone is very friendly
the large pool at the house is brilliant ,a lot of days we never moved away from it and if you have children very large garden for them to play in.Had a few nice strolls along the canal in the evenings or sometimes just sat and watched the boats go by -what a life-i could do this more often, roll on next year.
I would recomend this house to anyone.
Thanks to Janice for letting us stay there.

I want to thank you for allowing us the use of you

Review Submitted: October 21, 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
I want to thank you for allowing us the use of your fantastic house in Parraza,we had such a great time there, that we can not stop praising your house to every one we speak to. The area was also fantastic we managed many visits to Carcassonne and to some of the surrounding beaches, but we mainly stayed at the house enjoying the relaxation and the sunshine, you are very lucky to have such a great retreat from the British weather. I would not hesitate to recommend your house to anyone, in fact we have probably been spoilt and I personally doubt that any where else will match the high standards of your house.

Again many thanks.

Kind Regards....Tony

Well equipped villa and great pool

Review Submitted: July 17, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Just enjoyed 2 weeks in this quiet village setting. The photos and description were all accurate and it was clean. We had a moment of panic when no linen was to be seen, but found this in the bathroom cupboard. The kitchen was very well equipped.
There was sky TV (basic channels only) so could keep track of UK programmes/Wimbledon. Also a good selection of videos/DVDs/books. There were travel adaptors available, and hairdryer with diffuser attachment.
The weather was very hot the first week, so the pool was a blessing. The pool is large and clean, and some inflatables in shed for use. The beach at Narbonne Plage was reasonably quiet, could hire parasols/loungers - sea very cold, though. Not too windy when we were there.
We visited Carcassonne twice, which is beautiful, and Narbonne and Minerve, both worth a visit. There are lovely villages along the Canal, and we hired a boat at Homps (expensive but good fun, and relaxing). The supermarkets are quite close - details in information book and visitors books at the house.
There is a playpark just behind the house which our kids used most nights. Also some bikes are supplied in the shed, 3 adult, 1 older childs, small trike too.
All in all a great retreat. Easy to find, handy for lots of sight-seeing, or just relaxing by the pool.

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday

Review Submitted: July 1, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
My husband, 5 yr old son and I had a lovely time staying at this villa in June which is close to both Narbonne and Carcasonne. We were extremely glad that we had the lovely pool to use as this area is very windy and the beaches are un-usable. The villa was very well appointed, with a covered outside eating area and sitting space. We had use of the sky telly, and a selection of DVD's and videos which was useful on occasion.
The villa is situated just on the outside of the village and was really quiet.
We visited Carcasonne which is fantastic and can be highly recommended, we went twice as we couldn't get around all of it in one day.
We found that eating out was quite expensive, we had a 2 course meal and a couple of drinks each which cost about 70 euros in total, the exchange rate isn't very good at the moment, the food was delicious though.
The market at Lezignan Corbiere on Wednesday gave an excellent supply of fresh fruit and veg.
We had a lovely time that went far too quickly!!! Thanks very much to the owners of this lovely villa and home.

Lovely village haven

Review Submitted: July 14, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at this villa in the the lovely little village of Paraza.
The villa is exactly as described and is very private on the outskirts of the little village. The village itself has a very small shop which we only used occasionally to get fresh bread. Super markets are only a short drive away. There are 2 restaurants in the village, we only tried one Cafe du Port, which was very good. The menu changes weekly, and while the meal was very good we felt a little expensive (20 Euro for 2 courses).

We had the most relaxed holiday here spending a lot of time by the pool. We used the BBQ most evenings as we could be flexible and eat when we wanted. The outside space at the back of the house is good, a veranda with shade for when the temperature by the pool was too hot which had comfortable lounger/seats. There is ample dining space on the veranda - and as this is where the BBQ is situated it was perfect!

The villa is very well equipped and comfortable and looks exactly like the pictures on the website. The caretaker arrrived with the freshly laundered bed linen and towels on the afternoon of our arrival and she collected these again on our last morning. There is a washing machine which allowed us to keep up to date with our own laundry as well as the towels that we used. A cleaner came in as we left on the last morning - the house was clean when we arrived. The TV receives freeview UK satelite chanels which was very useful.

There is a useful pack of information about the local area and maps to help with seeing the local sights. Richard, who comes to look after the pool, was very helpful when we asked for suggestions on the best local beaches.

All in all we had a great holiday - really relaxing. If you are looking for relaxation in a quiet location then this is for you, I would have no hesitation recommending this house to a friend or returning again myself.
