The Ceze Valley region of Langudeoc-Roussillon is fantastically natural. The Bagnols region is known for its quality of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and walking trails, which lead through the varied landscapes, past historic sites and into the foothills of the Pyrenees or along to the famous Mediterranean coastline of Southern France.
The River Ceze itself is best explored from the seat of a canoe or kayak. There is no better place to enjoy canoeing, seeing the most natural of landscapes from the peace of the river. Fishing is also fantastic in the area, and as long as you have a fishing permit (available from any local tabac), you can fish almost every river locally. Bagnols, or Bagnols-sur-Ceze to give the town its full name, is the gateway to both Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. The ancient market square lies right at the heart of the town, with ancient streets emanating outwards like wheel spokes. Local traditions still live on strong, and the excellent (post-impressionist) Art Museum is home to the artistic treasures of Matisse and Marquet.
The village of Goudargues, or the ‘Venice of Gard’, is one of the finest places in the whole of France to simply relax and loose yourself in the French countryside. Located in a wide plain in the shadow of a centuries old forest, Goudargues is fantastically peaceful, surrounded by endless walking, horse riding and mountain biking trails for those who wish to explore the extensive countryside that shapes the region. The huge market held on the last weekend of July draw visitors from every corner of France.
The ancient village of Cornillon lies on a rock outcrop overlooking the hills and woods of the Ceze Valley. The village is a magnificent hideaway throughout the year, but the arrival of the World Championship Bicycle and dirt-bike races in spring and the many religious and historic celebrations of summer see the village transformed into a hive of activity.
